Mavericks Send Yakupov to Charlotte
1st Overall Pick’s Impact Not As Immediate As Hoped
The Mississauga News – Thursday, February 6, 2014

23 year old winger Jared Staal joins brother Marc in Mississauga line-up

The Mississauga Mavericks find themselves in an uncomfortable position 54 games in the regular season. Having already given up their 1st round pick in hopes of improving their place in the Eastern Conference, the Mavs have since dropped to dead last in the East, no thanks to a barrage of injuries to key players. Each of Yakupov, Morrow, Avtsin, Sutter, Joslin, Leopold and Rissanen have seen tim on the injury list, and this has lead to inconsistency throughout the line-up. More line shuffling has this time resulted in the reassignment of 2012 1st overall pick Nail Yakupov to the Charlotte Checkers. Yakupov was unable to build off an amazing 5 point night earlier in the year and totaled an underwhelming 17 points in 41 games. Right Winger Jared Staal has been recalled from a Charlotte team who’s offensive struggles mirror those of the Mavericks. Staal only picked up 22 points in 45 games with Charlotte, but this is an unfamiliar low for the youngest Staal.

Jeff Skinner (C) / Alexander Avtsin / Justin Williams
Brendan Morrow / Zach Boychuk / Jared Staal
Alex Burrows / Brandon Sutter / Jussi Jokinen

Ouch, sucks to hear about the Mavs struggles!
How's Avtsin producing? I see he's on your top line. If you tank this year, hopefully there's a franchise guy jext year(2015) so you can tank with a purpose ;)

Everyone of my players not named Jeff Skinner and Justin Williams are playing like garbage. Avtsin only has 20 points in 56 games, just moved him to the 1st line to have a PLY between two SNPs, nothing's working, I'm getting desperate

I think I'm going to be fired.

Brisebois' Busy Day
Two Danish Centremen Highlight Mavericks Trade Deadline
The Mississauga News – Friday, March 7, 2014

lars_eller.jpg

Lars Eller makes the trip down highway 401, joining Mississauga from Montreal

Boychuk, Avtsin, Sutter. None of the Mavericks Top 3 centremen seemed to fit the bill as Jeff Skinner's pivot this season. With the Mavericks threatening to finish last in the conference after doing so as the Hurricanes two years ago, GM Julien Brisebois decided to make a splash or two at yesterday trade deadline. First, Brisebois sent third line winger Jussi Jokinen to the Flyers who offered the services of Danish defensive specialist Peter Regin and Latvian depth defenseman Oskars Bartulis. Regin put up 30 points in 2011-12 for the Ottawa Senators, but his numbers suffered with a reduced role in Philadelphia. Regin's role will likely be defensive in Mississauga, but with feisty Burrows and Jones on his wing, the potential is always there for the new third line to chip in on the offense. Next, Brisebois pounced on Danish centre Lars Eller when it was made clear that Montreal was shopping the strong, talented pivot around. Eller is amidst a break-out season, totally 46 points in 66 games so far on Montreal's second line, and with Morrow and Skinner on his wings, coach Kirk Muller who has worked with Eller before, is confident his numbers can continue to impress. Mississauga lost the services of Derek Joslin in the trade as well as Brandon Sutter who had been with the franchise since being drafted 11th overall in 2007. Finally, smooth-skating Russian blueliner Dmitry Orlov was added in a 4-piece trade. Orlov put up impressive numbers in 3 years for the Hershey Bears, a performance that had gone seemingly unnoticed by the Washington Capitals who never called up the Russian puck-mover in 3 years. Orlov will make his NHL debut with Mississauga on the third pairing with responsible Justin Faulk.

My old franchise file got corrupted, so started another franchise by relocating the Panthers to Hartford. They will be the Hartford Huskies. Their colors are grey, black, and gold. Sounds like a weird combination, but I promise you it looks good.

First thing I did was trade Versteeg for a prospect and Ottawa's 1st. I understand he's young and he's the future, however, I wanted to clean house a bit, and build my own team from almost scratch.

I thought Ottawa would have a lottery pick, but currently at the trade deadline, they're first in the conference. I'm also in line to only get like the #8 pick.

Captain Skinner: "Stunned and Overjoyed
Late Season Tear Catapults Mavericks Into Playoffs
The Mississauga News - Wednesday, April 16, 2014

GYI0060408120_crop_450x500.jpg

Danish set-up man Lars Eller fit Mavericks like a glove, a huge reason for shocking rise

It's no secret that the 2013-14 Mississauga Mavericks had been written off by both fans and media, however clearly management and more importantly the players never gave up on a season that seemed destined for disappointment. Sitting dead last in the East at the trade deadline, Brisebois offered the Montreal Canadiens a handsome package for centreman Lars Eller. Eller along with Peter Regin and Dmitry Orlov breathed new life into a defeated squad who went a blistering 15-3-1 after the deadline and steamrolled competition en route to a 6th place finish in the East. After endless shuffling of lines, the acquisition of Eller and the movement of Alexander Avtsin to left wing finally solidified the Mavs Top 6. Captain and leading scorer Jeff Skinner gives his take on the late-season push, saying "I'm stunned, and overjoyed. You know, you read the articles and hear what the fans are saying, and we were definitely headed towards a terrible season. But part of being a professional athlete is being able to continue on and play every game to win. And then the wins came and here we are."

The Mavericks take on the 3rd placed Washington Capitals who's strength lays in their elite top line of Semin, Backstrom and Ovechkin, after which the offensive group falls off, a lack of depth that could hurt them. The high powered line could run into some trouble against a Mavericks defense and goaltender that allowed the 5th least amount of goals and a 2nd ranked Penalty Kill. "I think the key here will be team defense" says coach Kirk Muller, "Sure we have our shutdown pairing of Marc and Rasmus, but we play defense as a team, all 4 of our centres are stellar defensive players, and we have a team that can compliment that." The Mississauga Mavericks also have the unique pleasure of being favourites in the series despite being the lower seed. Their new energy and 15-3-1 post-deadline record led 74% of sports media to pick the Mavs to advance to the 2nd round.

Mavs Down Caps In 5
Strong Play At Both Ends Of Ice Carrying Over Into Post-Season
The Mississauga News - Friday, May 2, 2014

Cam_Ward_BF1_0349.jpg

Morrow-Eller-Skinner out-gunned Semin-Backstrom-Ovechkin, combining for 24 points in 5 games, but Cam Ward was the story.

In a series where Semin, Backstrom and Ovechkin were supposed to hog the highlight reel, the Caps trio was shutdown and the Mavericks first line of Brenden Morrow, Lars Eller and Jeff Skinner shone bright. In 5 games, Lars Eller led the Mavericks with 9 points (5+4), Morrow tallied 8 (4+4) and Skinner picked-up 7 (1+6). What was interesting was the seeming role-reversal between Jeff Skinner and Lars Eller. The duo along with Morrow catapulted the Mavericks into the playoffs with the formula of Lars Eller setting up sniper Jeff Skinner, but Eller has been a scoring machine and Jeff Skinner is happy setting up his teammates if it means success. The 5 game "gentleman's sweep" of the Capitals came with huge performances by Cam Ward (with help from stellar defense) who allowed 3, 1, 2, 2, and 1 goals in 5 games, a 1.80GAA.

With three upsets in the East, the 4th, 6th, 7th and 8th seeds advanced to the conference semi-finals. The 4th placed Senators line-up against the 8th placed Bruins while the 6th placed Mavericks take on the 7th seeded Flyers. The Mavericks' second round opponent is notably deeper than the Capitals. The Flyers 4 lines and defensive unit have no glaring weaknesses, and players like Giroux, Schenn, Briere and van Riemsdyk could give the Mavericks defense some trouble, although the Flyers still have to crack red-hot Cam Ward.

No Goal!
Last Second Game 6 Drama Sends Flyers Packing, Mavs Into Battle Of Ontario
The Mississauga News - Friday, May 2, 2014

BSM%2BLaviolette.jpg

Flyers Coach Peter Laviolette lets referees know what he thinks of last second waved off goal

The 2014 Playoffs have not been without their drama, and Game 6 of the Mississauga/Phildelphia series added to the excitement. Having came from behind to force OT (and win) in Game 5, the Philadelphia Flyers looked poised to do the same in Game 6. With the seconds dying down, down 3-2, pressure mounted on the Mavericks defense, until a Danny Briere shot bounced into the air off of Cam Ward’s pad and James van Riemsdyk batted the puck into the net with 0.6 seconds on the clock. The Flyers celebration was cut short when one referee waved the goal off bravely in front of the Philadelphia crowd. Instead of sending the Flyers into overtime, the call sent the Flyers onto the golf course.

The Eastern Conference finals, for the first time in the history of the current conference system, features a clash of two Canadian teams and in this particular instance, two teams from Ontario. The 4th seeded Ottawa Senators and the 6th seeded Mississauga Mavericks will go into battle after neither team needed 7 games to dispatch of their opponents.
