Svech outhustles every guy on the team on his back checks, chasing his guy all the way down to the goal line. He’s done it since he was 18, it’s why Rod played him early on. He and Foegele were the only guys on the team who would do it all the way back. Most give up when it looks like the play is dying or does die. Svech will chase them anyways. He takes stupid stick fouls and his passing choices makes his puck management questionable but he does his main defensive duty better than any guy on the team. I don’t know how that figures into the maths here, but I hold Svech in high regard in general about his defensive play. Aho is not a stud defensively, as we most recently saw on the game losing goal the other night. He’s a good all around two way guy but he’s often guilty of sitting in passing lanes hoping to pick off pucks instead of actually chasing down the guy he should be.

These are all good points on Svech’s defensive effort, but I have a hunch that this actually boils down to him generating stats with his defense — hits, takeaways — compared to guys who play it more positionally, along with a Corsi advantage. Basically the same reason his model underrates Slavin.

Do we know if Rod wants him chasing guys vs sitting in the passing lane?

That mindset helps lead to a lot of counter attacks with his speed.

The new cards were fun and somewhat informative. Just another data point which doesn't hurt. But there were definitely some things that seemed quite off compared to what we see. Of course, the truth is probably somewhere in between what some stats say and what our eyes tell us.

That mindset is a sin in North American hockey which is exactly what we play. You won’t find a coach on this continent that thinks it’s acceptable to sit in the passing lane vs actually taking the guy out of the play. It’s the NA definition of lazy defense. It’s the reason so many undersized high end skill euros have struggled over the years. The cherubs get leeway to do the things they do because they play d well enough and work hard enough while creating a lot of offense and being our top two guys the last few years who we need regardless of things like this. Rod will let you take chances if you outscore your mistakes. He’s as old school as they come though, no one else on the team does that stuff.

Anyone check out the recent card format update on Athletic mid season grades for the team (and every team)?

His model hates the defense of a lot of players on the team. It makes sense in the context of the overall narrative: great goaltending masking a weak 5v5 defense. Despite having the #3 overall rank in actual 5v5 GA/60, they're 9th worst in xGA/60 according to NST's model (Link).

They had a similar actual/expected differential last year. For me, the eye test is middle-right on the spectrum of goalies that the league has shown little faith in overall having carried this team to the stats aren't capturing how they play effectively.
