Time to revive the old on topic news and notes thread! Part V seems to have died in June 2012, and search isn't turning up one from last season, though this is most directly a continuation of the offseason threads. It's just, you know, the season and all.

So if anyone needs a refresher, this thread is for miscellaneous news, notes, speculation and rumors about the Canes. Bits and pieces of coverage that probably aren't worth their own thread and discussion thereof.

So to kick it off, some coverage of Jordan Staal cutting out the chocolate and Gerbe's presence bringing him back to playing a north-south game:

Part of the reason the pairing has worked so far, according to the Hurricanes, is that Gerbe plays a north-south game that belies his 5-5 size. That's how Staal likes to play, and that's exactly what he felt was missing from his game last season -- his first after signing a 10-year, $60 million contract. That pressure, combined with the short season, didn't help Staal's state of mind, though he still managed 31 points while driving play against top competition.

Also, Puck Daddy has a nice little piece on Gerbe, his brother in law's death, and where he's at mentally with the new season and team.

Nathan Gerbe just wanted to get back on the ice last summer.

The course of his career had suddenly changed. The diminutive winger – he’s listed at 5-foot-5 – had spent his five-year career with the Buffalo Sabres, but injuries had limited his time and his output. He needed spinal surgery after a Marc-Andre Bourdon hit in Dec. 2011, plagued by neck and back discomfort.

In 2013, he had 10 points in 42 games; the Sabres then used a compliance buyout on Gerbe, cashing out the final two years of his contract to save money against the cap and open up a roster spot. The Carolina Hurricanes took a chance on him, signing him to a 1-year, 2-way contract for $550,000.

Nathan Gerbe just wanted to get back on the ice. But then tragedy struck.

"Connect any two NBA, NFL, and MLB athletes in history—even if they played different sports."

Then they go and tell me there's no link between Marquis Grissom and Eric Staal. This is disappointing.

Edit: Wait, they have NHL players but don't promise cross-league NHL links. That was confusing. I no readz gud.

No NHL players have played in top leagues for the other three sports, so there are no links to them.

Yeah, that's what I had thought, so it makes sense. I just read that wrong. Then I couldn't delete the post once I realized how dumb I made myself look.

I just did this and was about to post it. One of the first one's I've done that hasn't included either a Howe or Francis.

At least I'm better than somebody at something.:sarcasm:

Yeah, I'm trying to do obscure players from each coast, and some big name always pops up and ruins it all.

EDIT:

This is far less exciting than I hoped...

Brind'Amour playing with the 91-92 Flyers with Mark Howe really shortens most of the random chains between people.

Tomas Malec has connections, man.

It takes at most ... eight [steps] for hockey.

Sounds like you can't do any better.

Gordie Howe and his kids are killing me. So is the combination of Dave Keon and Ron Francis; that one year they played together in Hartford connects almost 45 years.

KIRK MULLER played on the 1997-98 Florida Panthers with ...
John Vanbiesbrouck, who played on the 1988-89 New York Rangers with ...
PETER LAVIOLETTE

That was a bit of a letdown.

This 30 for 30 about the fake owner for the Islanders is great.

Yeah, I'm enjoying it. I remember when all this happened, but frankly didn't pay that much attention to the details back then so it's fun to watch now. Amazing what this guy got away with.

This 30 for 30 about the fake owner for the Islanders is great.

It’s right up there with “The Uâ€, “Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks†and “ June 17, 1994†on my personal ranking of the 30 for 30 films. Kevin Connolly did a very good job. I liked that the tone was more comedic than the dark and depressing one used for seemingly all of the American Greed episodes on CNBC. Although, I’m not sure how you don’t go about making an amusing documentary considering how preposterous the whole situation was.

I thought he did a good job *directing.* His narrating did nothing for dramatic effect, IMO. To me it took away from everything that happened.

But, I love the tone of American Greed. Lol.
