Just was curious the feedback...live in Raleigh (28 years now) but an Islanders fan since '72 (sorry..and yes, for some time...sorry...lol). All in all despite the underlying "promotional" motives...which I am sure play a large part, it is kinda an interesting way to honor the teams past and keep it "in remembrance" as the generations age....though i do admit, would be better if one knew it was the only motivating force. I had followed the Whalers since there inception more or less to some degree (sorry, the Canes less so, but as i live here, more than most other teams) and I have always loved the Whalers logo and uniforms. Teams move, was sad to see them leave, but it is part of the business, one that sucks for fans.....but this is a cool little idea no matter the motivation...and to be able to see those jerseys on the ice again.....cool.

This may have been mentioned in the discussion about the Athletic writer selection, but if not:

That pretty strongly implies that they offered Luke the job, or at least that he explored it as a possibility.

He never explicitly said it in the tweets, but Luke point-blank says he had an opportunity to join The Athletic in the N&O column at the end of the tweet thread:

Some personal news to share: I’m not going anywhere

I think that gives some good insight into the Athletic's approach. They went for the obvious, established local guy and couldn't get him. Chip is, with all due respect, not a guy you hire to the Athletic (much more of a traditional newspaper beat-writer kind of guy). The only other option would be Cory, who for all we know was interviewed and either didn't make the cut or wasn't interested in changing his situation.

Given the options on the table once Luke and possibly Cory are removed, hiring an up-and-comer makes more sense.

Agreed. And I think it's better for coverage in the market to work out this way. Although Luke isn't the beat writer anymore, he still provides a good amount of coverage as a columnist. This keeps him there providing coverage another columnist might not, keeps Chip as a beat reporter, and adds a new beat reporter.

Who knows if North State Journal would backfill on the Canes if they poached Cory? Even if they did, I doubt they would get as good a replacement as The Athletic did. IMO, this is probably the best combination of coverage we could get from The Athletic entering the market.

I don't particularly care for Luke's work, but as a newspaper guy that thread is heartwarming.

And it's true. People get so hung up on the big national outlets (whether it's sports, politics, entertainment or any other damn thing) and fail to realize it's your local news people that are actually living and working in the same place you live and work and bust their butts trying to cover the things that people care about.

CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, ESPN, etc. couldn't give two wet farts about your local sports team or your tax dollars being wasted on nonsense at city hall. It's a shame we've become such corporate-centric consumers of, well, everything.
