You know what?

I don't ****ing care

I don't. Not an ounce. I'm totally fine with being a petty vindictive little **** about this. For the first 15 or so years, it was endless "you don't deserve this, Hartford was so much better". Hell, even when the Canes won the Cup, ESPN refused to call them the Canes in the postgame highlights. And then the last 5 years its been all about how we should Bring Back the Whale, or Move to QC. Yeah, nah. You degrade us that long, I have no shame in holding onto that grudge for a long time after.

And as someone who used to think a lot like you do at one point in time, that anger and rage can't sustain you. You grow out of it eventually and realize it's not worth it and look back on it and realize how petty it is that you chose to take the low road rather than stay above it all.

Who gets the money from the whalers jersey sales? Isn't the logo owned by the NHL?

Sales of all gear from shop.nhl.com go into a pot, IIRC, that'd distributed among the 31 teams. I think only arena store sales stay in the team's pocket. The Whalers trademarks have been held by the Canes and the NHL since the team left Hartford (does nobody remember the lawsuit last year?)

So... does that mean that the Canes might be selling Whaler shirts and hats in arena? Because if so, I might have to time my next visit to North Carolina in the hockey season.....

They've been doing that since last year, NFS.

Yeah, again, I get not wanting to be involved with anything Whalers from some people (though even as someone that gets rage filled quite easily, I think the reactions can be a bit extreme on this), but money and attention are the reasons why Dundon did it. And it looks like it will work. I can understand trying things like this with something you've made a big investment in with regards to money and time and passion. I think ultimately, the upside will outweigh the sour patches that don't like it.

I agree with this. I used to get so mad, but now I just wonder why people waste so much time and energy on hating on Quebec, or Hartford, or people that think we didn't deserve the Cup. In all these situations, we "won". Let go of some of the anger and bitterness.

That's the thing, I'm not angry, I'm loving this. I moved past anger years ago, but I remembered and saved the receipts and now I'm just willing to take any opportunity to throw every last piece of trolling directed our way back in the face of the hockey community from here to eternity. And believe me, seeing all this anger about this jersey brings me no end in joy. We took the one thing they thought would piss us off, appropriated it for our own and are now effectively using it against that narrative. It's wonderful, I absolutely love it. Haven't been this proud of the franchise since the last playoff run.

Saw some hockey purists calling this desecration of a grave and a shameful act and their tears couldn't be any more delicious.

The state of Connecticut was granted the team's IP as part of the agreement to let them out of the lease early. The state, having been given a gold mine, proceeded to do nothing with it for like 10 years and lost it due to inactivity. The league then immediately snatched up the rights and immediately began flogging retro merch.

If Karmanos did this I would spend my life savings to buy as much crap as I could, douse it all in kerosene and wrap it all around his house and set it off.

Now? I like it. I really do. I live in Colorado where we have essentially the same situation and no one cares. People think the Nordiques jerseys are cool, they’ve been for sale in the team store for almost the entire 20 years I’ve been here. Everyone gives a general nod to the Nords fans who you’ve got to feel for but other than that colorado won. We’ve got the team so there’s no bad feelings heading in the other direction.

I get why some whalers fans would be pissed and others not. I rarely get Canes fans hate. It’s your heritage. It’s your team too. Never have two different fan bases gone through almost exactly the same level of misery for essentially the same time. We have a shocking amount in common. If you want one, buy one and if you don’t thats cool too. Other teams wear different jerseys, and we’re never going to be in a special outdoor game. TD did well here, because he knows the fans like it AND he makes cash. That’s a win/win.

And Svechhammer can go eat a bag of #%*?’s.

Where does one purchase a bag of #%*?'s and are they precooked, microwavable or what

Otherwise I agree it's time to be past the anger although I totes reserve the right to troll the **** out of somebody who talks **** about the Canes on account of geographical bias. Not because it makes me mad, but because I know it makes them mad and because at this point the argument is nearly impossible to lose.

Considering the crap we have to put up with regarding "irrelevancy" and "Move Somewhere Else!", it can make a Caniac very salty, but to be mad at the organization for deciding to take advantage of something that's still popular and profitable and saying "Screw them!" baffles me.

This shows we OWN the Whalers intellectual property! We own the logo!

I get what you're saying but Colorado as a market gets a ton more respect than Carolina. I'm not aware of Colorado having Canadian vultures spreading lies and relocation rumors while telling you that you don't deserve a team.

Whenever expansion is announced or relocation or attendance no one is crapping on Colorado. I think that is what paints things differently here.

Hell Quebec lost the Nords and instead of talking about Colorado relocating there they pester us.

I wonder if the Quebec vultures were constantly after your franchise and Carolina only got crap from Hartford area fans if feelings would be different.

Okay, I promised at least a little rant, so here goes.

I hate this. It's spitting in the face of those of us in or from North Carolina who have put up with this team for the last decade. It concedes to the assholes and vultures around the league who never gave a crap about the Whalers when they were around that teams were better off in any shitty northern market than in the South. The cause of the Whalers has become a totem of the ****wits who think that we're all hicks who can never understand hockey and shouldn't have a team. After loyally suffering through the abominations of hockey that this organization has shat on the ice over the last decade, I take this as an insult. Our ownership is saying that we aren't good enough as fans, so we're going to start making out with the assholes who hate us most, and they expect us to buy tickets to watch.

Seriously, screw that. Sell the merch and take the money, whatever. It's nice for the 10 people who were fans of the Whalers before they moved, and since all 10 of them post on this board, great. But don't put it on the ice. It's an insult to everybody.

Yes, but these people are stupid and pathetic, so ultimately, the joke's on them.

You can't stop stupid people from being stupid; and believe me I've tried. Just assume that they're getting what's coming to them eventually for being small-minded and ignorant.

If they beat up the ruins in those uniforms I am going to be a total sobbing mess watching it. One final Whalers victory over those mother****ers, I am even getting choked up right now just thinking about it.

One thing I’m looking forward to in all of this, is being there for that game and having actual fun (remember fun???) with all of this. It’s going to be a great night at the arena, especially if we win. This might actually be the closest thing to a Winter Classic that we’re going to get... a chance to just be different and weird with the whole world watching.

OMG, the Nords guy in the main board thread NEEDS to find out about this.

You know what’s great about this, though? This is when dads started showing up to your favorite band’s concerts. This is when your grandma got on Facebook. We’re taking the hipster totem, and we’re co-opting it, and we’re making an assload of money off of it. The next time someone plays the “bring back the Whalers!” card, they’ll be doing it to fans who actually did bring back the Whalers. As a gimmick.

This is how you kill it dead with fire.

If they are dumb enough to buy it because it's "official", let them. I'm mainly interested in it because while it has Whalers stuff all over the jersey, the neck has the Hurricanes red flag motif, meaning at the end of the day, you're buying this to support the Hurricanes, NOT the Whalers. I'll even put Hurricanes lapels while wearing it to point that out.

While I respect your viewpoint and understand it, I think it's an insult to 5% on both sides of this, but 90% either don't care or think it's kind of neat in a nostalgic kind of way. I wasn't born and raised in NC, but I've talked to a dozen fans about this today and most of them either shrugged their shoulders or loved it.

I mean, people have been screaming for the return of the Whalers for years now. They just didn't specify the 'how' in the return.

Whether people like it or not (and many don't for stupid reasons), Raleigh is a perfect market for the NHL. Highly educated, growing like a weed, on fire economically, loaded with transplants from colder climates (and not just the US or Canada), and has a passion for sports. People like living there, even former NHL players.

Most NHL season-ticket holders are your average white-collar suburbanites with a small mix of the younger urban-dwelling crowd, much moreso than the NBA/MLB/NFL. Raleigh is the definition of white-collar suburbia with a small but heavily-growing dose of urban-dwelling youngsters.

I bet if many of these idiots who yell at the top of their lungs "LOL move em to Quebec now!!!!!" were in positions of power in the league, they would understand why the NHL wants to be in Raleigh (and Phoenix, and Miami, and Tampa, and Dallas, and Nashville, and Columbus, and even Las Vegas, and perhaps even Houston one day). But they aren't, and thus any attempts to reason with them will fall on deaf ears.

Oh well. Ignorance gonna ignorance.
