It's a good name, unique in pro sports and very locally grounded. It's hard to draw a hurricane, but we did a pretty good job of it with the primary, and the hurricane flags give you a really strong visual element to play with. I think our design people have trouble because there's not much of a better way to do it than the way we originally did it.

As for Stormy, my siblings went to a high school with a tornado as a mascot. They had a guy in a tornado suit. Wasn't pretty. Going with the pig was smart, though you can't exactly include him in a logo.

The white collar is going to take me a while to get used to. The white jerseys have always had collars that were black with a red accent and now its white with a red accent.

maybe my biggest gripe here now that I've really had some time to think about it is that... well, its just a lot of red. The Canes have always had a nice balance of black and red with their home and away jerseys (except for the New Storm reds) and I think this kind of veers a little too far from that, and doesn't necessarily feel like a Canes jersey.

In my opinion, they were onto something nice with the black jerseys, and this is a jolt in the opposite direction. I'm sure I'll eventually learn to like it, but... I dunno, to me I'm underwhelmed in the same way I was about the New Storm red jerseys. It doesn't feel fully Canes.
I'd say it feels more Canes than any jersey we've every had

I actually love our main logo. Its a stylized version of the NOAA Hurricane symbol where we've swapped the red for white.

Basically just fattened and elongated it and put a couple design elements inside it to make it ours. I think it could be somewhat simplified to make it more modern, maybe remove the eyebrow and adjust the eye to make it all symmetrical, but other than that, its a good logo.

That and the laced front of course. The template isn’t changed, the colors are.

I’m looking at it like I’m given a template to design a jersey from. The yoke is a section of the template which you control the color. The sleeves are a section of the template that you control the color. But the stripes are what you have to decide on the location, number of them, etc. that’s what differentiates the template itself.

Maybe that’s a dumb way to look at it, I don’t know.

I mean, this definition of template does make sense as a reference to the literal physical template that the supplier will use to stitch fabric together and create the jersey. In that sense, the yoke on the old away really is the exact same thing as the yoke on the home jersey.

From a marketing standpoint, I would say that the Wings set (or old-school Pens set, or recent Canes set) are two different visual templates. It's not just minor differences in striping pattern (like, say, Chicago) but a completely different identity in how the color patterns are oriented on the uniform. Even though they probably are produced on the same template in the literal sense, where the effect is produced by swapping out different colors in the same stitching arrangement.

I think this is the real truth. For all the jokes about the swirling toilet and whatnot it's recognizable as a hurricane and the color scheme fits the area and the storm flag theme. Really if you take the silver stripe off the original jersey I'd call that pretty close to perfect. That's essentially what they did on the current red except for the red/red flags and the thick red stripe instead of white on the arms.

Its funny... go over to Icethetics and browse through all the old concepts that people have put together.

There aren't many, if any, concepts that look better than some of the stuff we've used over time. I have not seen one attempt at giving us a new logo that is an improvement over what we have.

Before I get started I have to reiterate that I love the aesthetics of sports and know that the look of a team and how it plays are two separate things and you don’t have to sacrifice one or the other. With that said.

So f’ing close to perfection. I never wanted a wordmark on the front but why the f*** do you do it in red and completely wash out the one good element of it with the C. I don’t like how there is zero consistency between the three jerseys. The template for the Jersey is excellent but having either logo on the front would have been a major improvement. Good thing is it will probably be changed in a few years or they are going to double down and change the home in a year or two to match the wordmark which would be the worst case scenario.

I will say I like it better than what we had but the front is the biggest letdown.

Edit again, Hurricanes don’t get the bright idea to change the main logo to just red and black. I f***ing despised the stadium series jerseys and if Edmonton’s leak is true. Can’t stand that trend that seems to be come.

I love the "c" in the wordmark honestly. Looks like cheap alternate jersey at all but could look good on the ice. I don't care as long as we continue to be good team.

It’s a better Jersey. If you disagree, you’re a fool.
But seriously. If the wordmark said 'JERKS' there is no way it wouldn't be one of the all time fastest selling jerseys in the league. People around the league would have bought it just to be a part of the joke.

Damn, now I'm a little ticked off they didn't do that

Even though I'm not really a fan of the redesign for now, I would buy a JERKS jersey immediately. That would be too awesome. I really hope they do a one-off run of them at least.

Before we get too depressed, consider that 99% of the time we spend looking at this jersey will be on TV screens from a vertical angle and a long distance. Considering the simplicity and "pop" of the colors, I don't think this is going to be that bad to look at in real life.

I don't think it's bad to look at necessarily, it's just unimaginative.

I also just like the oval hurricane logo and I hate to see it apparently being phased out.
