Matchups set for 2023 Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off in Milwaukee

Tournament runs Dec. 28-29 at Fiserv Forum

MADISON, Wis. – The matchups are set for the 2023 Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off (@HolidayFaceoff) which will take place Dec. 28-29, 2023 at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.

The third annual Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off begins for Wisconsin with the semifinal round on Thursday, Dec. 28 when it takes on Air Force. Minnesota Duluth squares off against Northeastern to open the tournament at 4 p.m. CT that day.

The semifinal winners will meet for the Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off title game on Friday, Dec. 29, along with the consolation match.

Tickets for the Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off are currently on sale. Both single-day and two-day packages are available for purchase at Ticketmaster.com.

THE FIELD
Wisconsin Head Coach: Mike Hastings, Big Ten
The Badgers, who won the inaugural event in 2021 and advanced to the title game in 2022, are led by new head coach Mike Hastings. Hastings spent eleven seasons as the head coach of Minnesota State posting a 299-109-25 record and two Frozen Four appearances. The Badgers have 26 NCAA Tournament appearances and six National Championships on their resume.

Air Force Head Coach: Frank Serratore, AHA
In 26 years at the Air Force Academy, Frank Serratore has led the Falcons to 438 wins, one of only seven active coaches with over 400 career wins. He has also guided the Falcons to seven conference championships and seven NCAA Tournament appearances – the only NCAA trips in Academy history.

Minnesota Duluth Head Coach: Scott Sandelin, NCHC
In 23 seasons behind the Bulldogs bench, head coach Scott Sandelin has led the Bulldogs to over 440 wins and three National Championships, including back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019. The Bulldogs have been to 15 NCAA Tournaments.

Northeastern Head Coach: Jerry Keefe, Hockey East
Northeastern is under the direction of third year head coach Jerry Keefe, who was the 2021-2022 Hockey East Coach of the Year for guiding the Huskies to a 25-13-1 mark and earning the program's first-ever regular season title. The Huskies are coming off a 17-13-5 campaign in 2022-2023. Northeastern has been to the NCAA Tournament eight times.

Last year, Wisconsin reached its second consecutive championship game, but fell, 3-1, to Clarkson in the championships game. UW won the inaugural event in 2021 with a shootout victory over Providence in the title contest. ...

Having too many players no longer reviewable after goals on ensuing play

Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee also clarifies scope of video reviews

Having too many players on the ice when a goal is scored on the ensuing play was removed from the list of plays that can be reviewed by video in NCAA men's and women's ice hockey for the 2023-24 season.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved this proposal during a video conference call Thursday.

NCAA Men's and Women's Ice Hockey Rules Committee members made the recommendation due to significant confusion with several parts of the rule last season, namely the threshold of a "gained advantage."

Despite attempted education during the 2022-23 season, rules committee members think the rule is better managed by the on-ice officials and should not be part of the instant-replay criteria. In many cases, this rule led to longer reviews and more incorrect outcomes.

Aspects of video review
The NCAA Men's and Women's Ice Hockey Rules Committee have issued a clarification to the video replay criteria to make clear the scope of a review.

This is intended to reduce confusion regarding reviews and what is allowed to be reviewed when the process is initiated.

For example, when officials are reviewing a goal that is scored and a team challenges for an offside infraction, officials are to review the offside play but not the entire play.

CT Ice college hockey tournament to return through 2025-26; XL Center to host this season

The CT Ice tournament will return for a fourth season and continue through 2025-26, the participating schools announced on Tuesday.

The annual tournament, which features Quinnipiac, Yale, UConn and Sacred Heart’s men’s ice hockey programs facing off against each other, will return for a fourth edition on January 26-27 at the XL Center in Hartford. It will be broadcast on SNY. ...

The four teams will square off in a two-round, four game tournament with semi-final games beginning on Friday and the championship round taking place on Saturday. The reigning national champion Quinnipiac Bobcats will also look to defend their title as CT Ice champions. ...

• Penn State Tops Preseason CHA Coaches' Poll: The Penn State Nittany Lions top the College Hockey America preseason coaches’ poll released Sept. 15 by the CHA. The Nittany Lions garnered five of five possible first-place votes in balloting among CHA head coaches (coaches could not vote for their own teams) for 30 points, five more than 2022-23 CHA runner-up Mercyhurst, which tallied 25 points and received the remaining first-place vote. Robert Morris, which returns to competition for the first time in two season this year, finished third with 23 points, followed by Syracuse (15 points), Lindenwood (14) and RIT (13) to round out the poll.
• Janecke Tabbed CHA Preseason Player of the Year: Penn State sophomore Tessa Janecke, the 2022-23 CHA Rookie of the Year, is the coaches’ choice for CHA Preseason Player of the Year. The Orangeville, Ill., native was a dynamic 200-foot player in her rookie season a year ago as she earned national Rookie of the Year honors to cap a breakout freshman campaign. She shared the national freshman lead in scoring with 47 points and finished second nationally among rookies with 22 goals. Lindenwood forward Morgan Neitzke also received a vote in the balloting.
• Hengelmüller, Mahoney Share CHA Preseason Rookie of the Year Honors: Forward Henlee Mahoney of Mercyhurst and defenseman Karolina Hengelmüller of Penn State are the CHA Preseason Co-Rookies of the Year. Mahoney joins her sister, Kylee, on the Laker roster after two seasons of junior hockey with the Stoney Creek Sabres. Hengelmüller was a member of the Austrian U18 program from 2019-22, earning a gold medal in 2022 as she led the tournament in defenseman scoring and a silver medal in 2020 as Austria competed in the IIHF U18 Division I Women’s World championships both seasons. CCHA Preseason of the Year Austen Swankler has entered the transfer portal. Which also brings about an interesting aspect in the fact that he was the one who received a waiver to be able to join BG after playing with the Erie Otters.

From TSN Rick Westhead: Former Bowling Green hockey player Austen Swankler (a Hobey Baker Memorial Award nominee last season) has gone public, alleging he left the school because was a victim of hazing. Swankler: “I came out about everything that happened to stop future incidents from occurring. Hazing is a serious issue especially to this school. So before you saying I’m dragging the school through mud know the facts. I know the facts because I was a victim… If coming out about hazing is being a bad team then I guess I’m a bad teammate.”

I also don't like the portal, but it doesn't affect me the same as the NCAA fans.

My complaint is that players are transferring because of playing time or other stuff which makes them NOT Student-Athletes but minor pros. In the CIS you can't jump to another school without sitting out a year, generally speaking.
The NCAA loses it's Chit if a B-Ball player gets a pizza for an autograph but has no issue with guys bouncing from school to school.
