OT: Need a little help

Good luck man, I hope you get better soon. I never had panic attacks but I suffer from anxiety and it has really made the last 6 years of my life ******. My best advice to you is to do whatever your doctor/therapist tells you to do and to start ASAP. The longer you wait to get treatment, the bigger the problem becomes and the harder it is to overcome.

Good for you for admitting there is a problem and wanting to find a solution. Personally I think everyone should do therapy, it is really hard but I grew immensely as a human because of it. You may not see it now but this all might make you a better person in the long run. Remember there is ALWAYS a way out.
Good luck friend, I feel your pain.

I know it won't help in the long term. But in the short term, you should seriously consider lighting one up and shooting some Bob Marley in the speakers.

Anyways, hope you get well soon.

Had another severe panic attack at midnight. Called 811 and spoke to them about my options. They felt going to the ER for a panic attack would take a long time and I'm better going to a clinic. I'm going to contact a therapist tomorrow as well.

I'm proud of you. Mental illness isn't easy, I've never had panic atticks but my daughter has social anxiety, I've had depression in the past but I can tell you this, it sucks reading about people who didn't get help, so when people like you reach out for help, it makes the world a better place because reaching out isn't easy.

But you've helped create a positive environment for encouragement and I see a lot of support in this thread, so you've helped create an environment for support.

Like somone earlier said, you can't just suck it up and feel better, we know that, but keep fighting to find a way out and get the help you need because people love you and there are a lot of people who want to see you persevere. It won't be easy but you are on the right path. Good luck and godspeed.

I don't know what else to add cause the others already covered it, but it took a lot of guts to talk about this, and I really hope you feel better soon.

Don't forget it's called mental illness and not weakness like some people think...

I've had a family member with a similar problem that decided he didn't want to bother other people with it.

Never be afraid to get help or talk about it.

Actually, that's probably the last thing you should do if you're suffering from panic/anxiety attacks.

Once again thanks for the feedback. My condition seems to be getting worse and the symptoms seem to be multiplying. I'm currently at the clinic waiting to see a nurse/doctor and already scheduled an appointment with a therapist.

Good luck. I would suggest deep breathing and stretching, etc. Yes the yoga/meditation approach is sometimes mocked but does not hurt to try.

Also remember you have people here at HF 24 hours a day.

The body has a way of looping symptoms. Break the cycle, even with a change in your daily routine will help. Happy to hear you're seeing a professional. My wife has suffered from these attacks for years now. Enough to keep her from working. Stick to positive family members and friends to get you through until you're better able to handle the idiots of the world again. Best of luck to you. :)

I'm very sorry to read that.

I myself had panic attack and anxiety disorder. It's taken care now, without changing who am I.

Le Pavillon Albert-Prévost is a psychiatric hospital on Boulevard Gouin. They also have an ER service, open 24h. Over there you're sure to meet specialists that would be able to help you short and long term.

I know it is not fun, humiliating and scary to go to a psychiatric hospital. But the truth is, it is the place to go. If it was your liver that was the problem, you wouldn't hesitate to go see a specialist. It's the same for what's going on for you.

I wish you all the best, sincerely.

Best of luck LL!

Had my first panic attack in the 90's after smoking some pot. Traumatic experience. It came back a month after that, had no idea what this was. There was no Internet at that time, so I went to the library and thought I was schizophrenic.

Met a psychologist, she asked me about family and my life but I was too deeply into it, I just wanted relief.

Met a psychiatrist, told me it was a panic disorder, pretty common, prescribed Xanax. The day I met him and that he told me what it was, I was almost cured. I wasn't gonna die, and I wasn't crazy.

Took very few Xanax, just knowing I had them and that they were effective made me feel secure.

Personally, I know that fatigue and alcohol (well, hangovers) can trigger anxiety and potential panic attacks. The best cure I have found is exercising, a lot. Jogging, crossfit, whatever. In my case, I just know that as long as I stay in shape physically, the worst anxiety I might feel will be easily tolerable. Oh and having pills available if you feel you might need them. I may take 3 or 4 a year, for prevention only.

Oh and funny fact: besides fatigue and alcohol, fluorescent light in small bathrooms automatically triggers big time anxiety for me. But since I know it, I'll just smile even though my whole body is telling me I'm gonna die within 30 seconds.

Keep us posted if you are up to it.
Unfortunately there is no magic pill or at least one that can kick in immediately.
Hopefully therapy can help you through the crisis phase.
Based on the desciption of your symptoms I'd be very surprised if they didn't take a two pronged approach to your treatment.

Best of Luck Champ

Hi LL,

I'm sorry I didn't see this thread beforehand.

I'm in my last year before becoming a psychiatrist.

My advice would be to absolutely go to your closest ER or better choice: the one you already have a file at. Every emergency doctor knows about panic disorder and does not take it lightly.

If you do that, he'll automatically refer you to psychiatrist that you'll see either the same day or the day after, you won't have to wait to get into the system. You'll get instant treatment and a follow up in less than a month, as well as therapy ressources.

Revivre, GEME and Phobie Zero are also filled with people suffering from panic disorder.

If you need anything, feel free to message me.

I must say, that as serious and genuinely important this thread is, we should all learn from it and practise a little more restraint and a lot more compromise and open-mindedness in other threads.

This is a family of sorts, after all. Dysfunctional as it may be at times...

- GET OFF THIS SITE! Seriously, at least take breaks. Some posters just antagonize and you don't need that. If you're addicted, put as many threads on your ignore list as possible.

Sadly, the same people who are so caring about your well-being in this thread, will tear you to shreds and hang your arguments by your entrails, the minute you start feeling better and you defend an unpopular position in another thread. :sarcasm:

Good luck, man.

+1 (hey, pot actually triggered my first panic attack).

Yeah, sorry guys, I must suffer from a different and milder form of anxiety. Because for me any depressant is way enough to cope with whatever anxiogen happens in my life.

Anyways, hope you get well soon, LL.

I too suffered from anxiety attacks a few years back. I was having trouble sleeping, which led to overall poor health. I then began researching my symptoms online, please, for the love of god, do not read about these things online. It's all doom and gloom, worst case scenario on the internet, my panic attacks increased the more I researched. Please get help from a professional and do not try to diagnose the situation on your own, it will only make things worse.

I don't know what news you received, but it is probably something that is easily dealt with in the long run, even most chronic illnesses and such can be managed to point where you live just as productive of a life as anyone else. Stay strong, recognize you have an issue that needs dealing with and seek help from those who specialize with dealing in these areas. Support groups with people going through the same things, sharing/expressing your problems out loud is often the best therapy.

You're already on the right track imo, recognizing you have an issue, speaking about it in an open forum is not easy, but keep in mind, most of us are not professionals and can only speak to our own experiences. There is no substitute for professional evaluation.

Sorry to hear about that man. This one hits home because this started happening to me too back in June. It couldn't eat, sleep, etc and I was constantly anxious and stressed all day long, most of the time for no reason at all, not to mention the occasional anxiety attack at night.

My best advice to you is to go to a walk in clinic. Describe your symptoms to the doctor and tell them you think it's anxiety (that helps, believe me). I'm currently taking medication for it right now, all it is is a pill a day and it's helped me tremendously. It takes 2-3 weeks to start working completely (and those weeks are gonna be hell, believe me) but once you ride out the storm, you feel great. It's been about two months since I've started taking them and the difference is night and day.

I know you don't really know me and we don't really interact on here too much, but if you're ever feeling super anxious and need someone to talk to, don't hesitate to PM me. I found that talking to people about it that understood what I was feeling helped when it was really bad with me.

Hope this helps.
