Ah crap. That is bad management of assets. I must admit though I do not know anything about the guy. Hopefully I am very wrong and he is a world beater.
Why?

He’s replacing one of Paquette, Dea or Belzile at the AHL level, how is this bad asset management?

Wait….have you scouted this player in depth in the past year?

Cause I can assure you that Hughes/Gorton’s people have.

At quick glance, he seems like a pretty good skater, strong on his skates and good hockey sense / work ethic.

Might pan out as a bottom 6 guy with good leadership? Low risk signing with the contract being only 1 year.

I think his age is the key. Being 24, the ELC is for one year, and his maturity level should mean that he does not need more than 1 year to develop further.

So if his leadership can help Laval for this year, it could be a risk worth taking to get the kids in Laval a long playoff run. If he does not pan out in terms of NHL path, they aren't stuck with him through 2025.

We shouldn't. I don't like it.

I think the 1 year ELC don't hurt. This appears like AHL depth to me.

* 29 current contracts for next year currently

* RFA's: R Pitlick, Pezzetta, Romanov, Schueneman, Montembeault, Clague, Schnarr, Teasdale, Brook, Niku, Primeau.

* UFA's we might sign: T Pitlick, Dauphin, Wideman, Vejdemo, Belzille,

Totals up to 45 contracts. That's enough wiggle room I believe and it's possible we don't sign guys like T Pitlick and Wideman.

Is he physical? Fast physical types have turned into solid NHL pieces despite not being eye popping offensively (Coleman). It's a good way for us to see if there's any improvements in amateur scouting/development. Previous 10 years has resulted in nothing.

From the tweets earlier in the thread, yes.

After watching him play a few times, He is a strong two-way forward with a slight edge to Leadership and Finishing plays. He is strong on his skates, has good balance and is coming into the league on a show me deal.

I like the signing, Could be a great 3rd line gem. Could be a bust. It's all up to how motivated he is and how the organization is able to motivate him.

Tied for 2nd in NCAA in shorthanded goals (3) and looks like he's good at faceoffs (56.2% won out of 665 draws). So potential good face-off 4th C that's physical and kills penalties.

If he can live up to Matt Martin's hitting tendencies, feel like we got ourselves a potential bottom 6 menace. Maybe not the next Jeannot, but who wouldn't like a hyper physical/good face-off/defensively sound 4th C. Rather get these types of complementary players for free/low draft picks vs overpayment at UFA or high picks.

This was the first thing that came to mind when I saw that he could skate decently and was otherwise 6'2 210.

This. Absolutely.

Just surprised they gave him an NHL contract instead of just an AHL/ECHL one but hey, who knows, only 1 year.

looks like he could be a Lehkonen replacement maybe if he pans out? I see he plays on the PK good defensive positioning from the little bit of highlights i saw in this thread

Heard from a friend that's a UMass-Lowell fan, his assessment was he's a classic good character guy, good faceoff/PK guy, C this year A last year etc., but likely doesn't have any NHL tools/role beyond as a PK specialist.

Seems like a reasonable move to me given Laval will be bringing in quite a few forward prospects next season, if he can be a good leadership presence and play a defensive 3C/PK1 role that makes sense, and you can always have the hope that a guy like this could figure out a way to stick as a pure defensive + PK specialist 4C in the NHL if he adjusts well to the AHL. Give him a year to see if he can be one of those guys that can score 10 points and be a good PK option no matter what level of play is and maybe he ends up being the 4C and we move Poehling to the wing some time next year or something.

Like I said earlier don't really think contract slots are a problem. After signing Pezzetta/Romanov/Pitlick/Scheuneman/Montembeault we have 15 slots left with a nearly full roster, and ton of prospects already signed (Guhle, Norlinder, Harris, Roy, Mysak, RHP, Xhekaj etc are already accounted for in this count leaving 15 slots), and only guys like Brook/Clague/Niku/Vejdemo/Schnarr/Teasdale left to sign alongside the 2022 1st rounder, and if that ends up being Cooley they wouldn't sign him anyway.
