Nazem Kadri is evolving into a solid two way C

Oh geez I completely forgot that we're talking about how his game is completely perfect. It made me completely forget all the other little good things he did last night and since the season began.

Let's abandon the thread guys. It's over.

Oh geez, I think you completely forgot this isn't the Leafs page and if you want to talk about Nazem-freakin-Kadri being a defensive beast then be prepared for people who watch great defensive players night-in and night-out to rip you apart.

Don't cry about it when it happens.

And if you don't see what Kadri did wrong on that play then you're not qualified to have the argument.

Anyway, here are some legit solid two-way C's:

Sean Couturier
Brandon Sutter
Ryan Kesler
Tomas Plekanec
Cody Eakin
Anze Kopitar
Adam Henrique
Frans Nielsen
Ryan O'Reilly
Ryan Getzlaf
Patrice Bergeron
Logan Couture
Jeff Carter
David Backes
Travis Zajac
Joe Pavelski
Jonathan Toews
Mikko Koivu
Martin Hanzal

When Kadri comes even close to playing like these guys, it's time for a thread. Until then? No. /Friendly tip

Haha. Watch some games before you make a fool of yourself.

I don't really know how to decipher most advanced stats, but just to either prove or disprove this guy someone compare Kadri to Bergeron (recognizing the disparity between team defense).

No love for Derek Stepan? Better 2 way center than a lot of these guys

Ohhhh snap.

You made your argument from the highlight package you watched this morning before going to work... or school, or whatever.

A little ironic that you're lecturing me about potentially not being qualified enough to have an argument about this. Did you have to go to the Armchair University of 'Bahston' to be qualified to talk about this on an internet forum? I'm sorry, I must have missed the class. Or is being a Bruins fan your only qualification? Did you find your reading comprehension class while there though? Because I must have missed where anyone said he was a defensive beast... Must be that salt clogging your vision?

So salty... so so salty.

Hmmm, if he's such an effective two-way force so far this season, maybe he should have played more than a grand total of 2 minutes and 57 seconds of time on the pk then.

yep, he should have.

he should also be centering kessel and on the top pp unit.

but randy's gonna randy.

Wait what? Who are these 2 #1 dmen we have? Phaneuf is just about it. Rielly might get there but not for a few more years. Who is this number 1 c as well? Bozak isn't and neither is Kadri yet. If he can kee up his recent scoring surge and stay strong on d then I will christen Nazem as a true number 1

PK doesn't make you a good defensive player. Tyler Bozak and JVR are good PKers but awful defensively ES. Not to mention he really should be getting more PK time.

Kadri has clearly been better than some of these players both offensively and defensively this season, so I guess the thread is warranted then.

Leafs have two #1Ds, a #1C, and a solid two way C. But are still mediocre somehow.

1. Phaneuf is a #1 D - point totals, T.O.I., advanced stats, etc. support this claim. Leafs' fans have never claimed to have more than one #1 Dman.
2. Bozak has been playing like a number one center this season and last season.
3. Kadri has been playing like a solid two-way center this season.
4. The Leafs are 7-1-1 in their last 9 games and aren't a mediocre team - they're decent. They're 5 points out of the conference lead with one game in hand.

Man, I love all the hate. Naz has been a freakin' beast. He's been a great two way forward this year.

Also, I love the hypocrisy shown in this thread. Some people actually have the audacity to say that we haven't seen other top defensive players, yet I doubt they've seen Kadri at all.

Why is it so hard to believe that he has been amazing this year? Because he's a leaf and it would go against the "he's Gagner 2.0" agenda?

Sorry for the rant, but it gets really tiresome when you go into a thread and there is mindless Leaf bashing.

I swear people on here get mad if they see a positive Leaf related thread

There are positive threads related to every team in the league, yet whenever people see a Leafs one, they go crazy. But I guess we should get used to it now. It's not like this is a new occurrence.

I just find it funny when people say there is no anti-Leafs agenda on this board, and that we're just playing "victims".

Detroit's goal yesterday argues against your point. He's running around chasing the puck when he should have been back in the slot.

I don't think you've played a game of organized hockey in your life. There was nothing wrong with Kadri's play on that goal at all, and Kadri was high in the zone because one of the wingers had rotated low if I remember correctly. The guy who scored was Rielly's responsibility, and covering the pass was the other defenseman's responsibility. I don't think Kadri's any better than average or perhaps slightly above average defensively, but pretty ridiculous to assign him any blame on that one.

Been a few positive leaf threads past few days must be on a win streak, will wait for them to lose and look for the tank/fire/phaneuf sucks threads

Oh, you can find those threads on the Leafs board right now. Even with a 7-1-1 record in the last nine. Apparently our "core" sucks.

looks like kadri is "close" to playing like these guys.

well...."close" to playing like the better ones on this list, not so "close" to playing like the bad ones.

Way to conveniently leave out QOC

Kadri has been one of our best defensive forwards this year and is one of our very few forwards who can maintain possession in the offensive zone and create a cycle (he's been doing it so well with Santorelli). He was hella snake-bitten at the start of the year but in the recent stretch has definitely been putting up points.

Kadri has been good defensively but part of everyone noticing this is because the Leafs, as a group, are horrendous on the defensive side of the puck. They're really, really bad and their offense and goaltending covers it up. I feel like I've seen this before hmmm...

well...."close" to playing like the better ones on this list, not so "close" to playing like the bad ones.
imho This is why TO hired analytics guys.

The problem though is that while all those other players kill a crapload of penalties, Kadri never does. To me the crux of the matter is that if a center doesn't kill penalties at all, then he cannot possibly be considered a solid two way center.

But as long as his 5-on-5 corsi numbers are good, we'll hear about his two-way play I guess.

Bottom line is that if TO wants to succeed, they'll eventually need their top players to become legit two-way players.

PK doesn't make you a good defensive player. Tyler Bozak and JVR are good PKers but awful defensively ES. Not to mention he really should be getting more PK time.
Winnik and Komarov, Holland and JVR are the PKers currently. It's typical for teams with one-dimensional top players to rest them and leave the harder minutes to the underlings. Besides, Kadri's new contract doesn't go up with more pk time, but with higher (low qoc) corsi numbers.

That all being said, if coaching is to blame for keeping Kadri's pk prowess down on purpose, then... Okay... (TO's pk is 8th though, so not sure if that's it.)
