Has anyone even mentioned that Toews has a no movement clause? Why would he waive it to go to Montreal, where they are in even worse shape than Chicago?

I don't think Toews is injury prone enough to be attractive to Bergevin.

He doesn't seem to be constantly hurt or getting concussed every week or two either - what a bust.

Plus he's way too young to lock in longterm for Bergevin's plans

This is what I think it could look like.
:hawks acquires
Alex Galchenyuk
3rd overall pick

:habs acquires
Johnathan Toews
8th overall pick
2019 Conditional 2nd round pick (If Galchenyuk scores over 60 points, it's a 2nd. If not, it's two third rounders, one in 2019 and the other in 2020.

This helps montreal alot. They finally get a number one center for the first time since Saku Koivu, and have potential to get another (if they reach) in a player by the name of Joe Veleno.
Does this make sense/work?

Doesn't help Montreal in that Toews isn't a #1, and he's paid very much more than most. Toews' play has dipped the last 3 years imo. Montreal should pass on the notion.

Personally, I would be trying to reset if I was Montreal, so I would say no.

But if the Habs are committed to winning with a Weber/Price core over the next few years, then absolutely they do this. 3rd to 8th isn’t a huge drop in this draft.

As it stands right now, Montreal looks like they are about to get stranded in Canuck land of rebuilding and trying to stay competitive at the same time.

Hawks should be pursuing something like this and may not get a better offer given Toews salary versus production.

Yeah the hawks should trade a no.1 center for peanuts because he’s overpaid by a 2 mill max.

I'd like him with the Habs but with Price and Weber contracts, that's too much to take. Either there is a significant (2.5+) retention or Bergevin finds a magic wand because Weber and Toews are past their prime and Price might arguably be too. Can he deal one of them to another team without being fleeced? I doubt it. In the end, that's a too much too long commitment in term of cap.

In that scenario, Habs fan must pray to God there is a chemistry between him and Drouin otherwise they are f***ed for a long time because they'll need a talented winger to play with him. If Toews comes in, he must be considered as the 1C and given talented wingers even if he's a 1B. So, with Pacioretty probably gone, Galchenyuk gone and 3OA (Zadina) gone, who is he gonna play with? Gallagher? Lehkonen? Come on.

About the NMC... his mother is from Beauce I think so, yeah, you would assume that it's preeeeeeeetty obvious he's gonna wave it. That's it, I just wasted too much time in responding to thi thread.

No, just no. The Habs need to rebuild properly and not give up 3rd overall picks and young players for a guy like Toews.

Even if they got Toews for free the Habs would still be bad. Giving up Galchenyuk and the 3rd overall... who's going to score goals if Pacioretty leaves? Gallagher ain't gonna score 50. Having $30m tied up in Price, Toews, and Weber guarantees a handicapped roster until they all retire. Even with those three players, who are all actually pretty good, that does not guarantee the playoffs or any success. The Kings have Kopitar, Doughty, and Quick and have managed to win one single playoff game in the last four years.

Just suck it up and rebuild. It's far and away the best choice for the franchise. That 3rd overall is a massive, massive plus that should not be traded away for a player in his 30's.

Oh, and Toews is not getting traded. He's earned the right to be a Blackhawk for life and they will very happily pay him millions over market value to mentor their youth.

No we wouldn't. But the reality is we can't take on that contract without sacrificing something big and with Toews' NMC and his legacy in Chicago, it's hard to see him ever being moved.

if chicago was willing to trade toews to montreal, i suspect it already would’ve happened. i doubt bergevin would be able to control himself, the mere thought of toews probably gives him a stiffy.

Let me get this straight.. CHI gets to recycle Toews into a player 7 yrs younger that produces as much as him with untapped potential still (watch him explode anywhere else) AND gets to move up in the draft? Where do I sign up?

Regardless of what you read from fans on the internet, the Blackhawks organization will not trade Jonathan Toews.

Fantastic. Keep it that way. Makes absolutely no sense for the Habs to acquire him, they ought to be rebuilding.

Doubtful that Toews would wave his no movement clause for this

Would the Hawks really move Toews? Sounds hard to believe. I could see the Habs taking on one of their big contracts on the blueline though. Gives the Hawks caproom and Habs veteran on the blueline. But the trade value would not be much
