The Flyers will be sellers at the trade deadline, but they will not part ways with a talented future core player like Tyson Foerster. They will probably deal away players like Sean Couturier at the trade deadline, and depending how the trial which won't be named there might be a goaltender on the trade wire.

They would have taken Reinbacher at 5 but that's only because they knew Arizona wouldn't take Michkov who they could then select at 7.
This and nothing else.

Michkov made it very clear he has no interest in playing for Arizona so if the Flyers could get the deal with Montreal they would have taken Reinbacher at 5 only because the risk Arizona grabs him at 6 is much higher and not because Reinbacher is more favoured.

Then again, they had to assume that Arizona could just as well have been planning on trading down. Say Washington offered a 2nd or some such incentive, to flip 6th and 8th.

You can't get too "cute" at the draft and assume you know who will be available at which spot.

If Philly was willing to trade Cutter Gauthier for #5 it's because they thought Reinbacher was the BPA at that slot, it's that simple. In the long run, they got their wish of converting Gauthier into a defenseman with high potential, so it's all good.

Do we know from Philly or neutral media about Philly wanting Reinbacher over Michkov?

Might have missed it.

Picking Michkov was a huge risk for the Flyers, and I'm sure Danny Briere did want to screw up his first draft as the Flyers GM. I still think it is a massive risk, because we don't know whether the Russians will allow Michkov to leave Russia to play in the NHL. I wouldn't have picked him for that reason, but Briere took a chance and gambled that way.
After what they just encountered from Gauthier, the Flyers don't need another failed first pick.
