Kovalchuk is playing 4D chess and we're all here playing checkers. What the heck is the move here?

If I had to guess, its:

1) Join a team decimated on the wings by injuries.
2) Get opportunity to play real minutes.
3) Put up some points and rehabilitate image.
4) Team he's joining likely wont make the playoffs.
5) Get traded to a contender as a rental.

It would be good plan, if not for the fact that Kovalchuk looked pretty finished in LA and likely wont look better in Montreal.

Desperation signing.

Kovalchuk seems like a poor fit with how MTL plays. We shall see if he re-discovers his speed, I doubt it but who knows?

Hoping he turns into Kovalev 2.0 I guess?

At least it's 700k. Thought Bargains would sign him for over 2 mil per. Enjoy the show Habs. He's so good....like 15 years ago ;).

I guess my only thing with that would be that this takes all the control away from Kovalchuk's end and gives it to MTL. He could have signed with any contender he wanted (that would have him), but now he is relying on MTL to trade him to a contender rather than a team on the outside looking in (perhaps someone thinks a cheap Kovalchuk is the difference between 8th and 9th). Maybe none of the top teams were interested in adding him at league minimum.

EDIT: I'll clarify that I totally get this from the Habs perspective, smart move with no downside. I just don't get it from Kovalchuk's POV unless no top-teams were interested and he thinks he can change their mind on the Habs roster.
