This is not true. Marchant's Selke record:

2000: 8th (Todd Marchant 53 (2-3-2-0-2))
2001: 10th (Todd Marchant, EDM 46 (1-2-4-0-2))
2003: 7th (Todd Marchant 87 (1-4-6-4-7))
2007: 59th (Todd Marchant, ANA 1 (0-0-0-0-1)) tied with a lot of other players with a single "pity vote?"
2008: 49th (Todd Marchant, ANA 5 (0-0-1-0-0)). ditto, only this time it was a 3rd place vote

That was hyperbole on my part, should have used a different phrase.

Still. The general point remains, I think he deserved better than topping out at eigth spot.

I've been watching the '74 WHA vs. Soviets Summit Series. Reminded me how great Alexander Yakushev was, yet today he's totally overshadowed by Kharlamov (of course), Firsov, Mikhailov, Maltsev, Balderus, the KLM line. For great Russian players that didn't play in the NHL his name doesn't seem to come up. The Big Yak was the leading Soviet scorer in both '72 and '74 Summit Series. In 37 games against Canada he scored 28 goals! Named best forward by the IIHF in '75. Yakushev just doesn't seem to get the props today. Perhaps not being on those great CSKA teams hurts his legacy but holy smokes was he good. His centreman, Spartak teammate Vladimir Shadrin was a fine two-way player as well.

Also, flat-out the fastest skater of the era.

Todd Marchant?

Which era was this?

Are we limiting it to Oilers forwards only?

Marchant was fast.

Here are some forwards who were faster:

Sergei Fedorov, Pavel Bure, Wes Walz, Darryl Laplante, Stacy Roest.

Marchant was timed at 13.7 seconds on a lap and his agility and acceleration was not unusual for a skater with his top-end speed; all of the above skaters put up times under that, some significantly under.
