You've also got the Devil's who like to name unassuming players captains. Last two captains are Andy Greene and Bryce Salvador.

Think that's a Lou thing. Leafs still going without a captain this season.

The obvious choices for the C going into next season would be Matthews or Rielly, but fully expecting something stupid like Polak or Komarov

Nothing obscure about a 5th overall pick who was well known and twice a gold medalist for the national team....
he was hyped asthe next big thing. while he never came close he was still a solid player

mackenzie broke into the league in the early 00s but i'm pretty sure he's only been a NHL regular within the last decade

so it's not like he's been in the league for close to 20 years and has gone completely under the radar

So obscure in fact that Comeau has only worn an A this year when MacKinnon or Johnson have been injured.

Maybe it just feels like he's been wearing it all season, because MacKinnon being out feels like an eternity.

But, with the effort Comeau and Bourque have been putting in, I don't mind either of them getting the recognition, even if it's only temporary.

Mark Messier for the Canucks

But other than him, the Oilers captains Smith, Moreau, Horcoff, Ference, and yet somehow Ryan Smyth was never named captain of the Oilers...

People could say Mike Keane for Montreal, but he's a legit good leader.

Kenny Jonsson for the Islanders.

Phaneuf for the Leafs, but I know at the time people thought the Leafs just acquired a franchise player, but he was able to provide a face for that time being.

Nobody can deny Shayne Corson.

Luongo is an interesting case.

I hate threads like these. A Captain is a leader, not just the best player or two on the team nowadays.

We have no idea how these guys were in the locker room. They might’ve been the guys giving the rallying speech during intermission, the one that pushes everyone else in the weight room, the guy that mentors the young’ins.

Without inside knowledge, we have no idea.

i would like to strongly suggest that any guy who is named as a captain is probably a legit leader, though I guess that may not necessarily be the case, i think it's stupid when some guys are named captain right after being acquired by a team, some times before they've even met the other guys. now that is dumb.

I 100% agree. I think the OP was looking for guys who we wouldn't necessarily expect to earn the captaincy, not who didn't deserve it.
