Great rare photo of Tony O. Nothing - and I mean nothing - beats the look of the masks from the 60's to the mid 80's (before the ugly cages). Each mask actually had a personality, and that was without custom painting. When you add some paint to masks that were already distinct, they were amazing. Too bad they were about as protective as a balaclava.

Today's goalie masks are virtually space-aged and a culmination of generations of equipment science. But as far as aesthetics go, there is "zero" personality. They all look the same, and the customization is awful. Most of them are montages that are difficult to make out unless you have a close-up photo to study for a few minutes.

Agree completely. That's one thing with some of these jerseys as well, they may look striking up close but in the stands or on the tube it just basically looks like a blur. Sometimes less IS more!

Cool beans. Given Mikkelson's plus/minus record, I am not surprised to see him caught out of position in this photo...

Yeah, he was brutal in that department, still owns the NHL-record (in one season). His uncle Jim McFadden by the way won the Calder Cup in the late 1940s

The Canuck in the middle here is Jyrki Lumme (not that it matters).

You know, for all the Rangers lost in giving up Mike Gartner for Anderson (who played only 12 RS games + playoffs), it's worth being reminded that Andy did come up trumps with game-winning goals in the '94 Finals in games two and three.

Thanks for correcting the player. I wasn't sure of who it was, but yes, I think you're right about Lumme.
Anderson was a money-player, he scored several key goals in his career. He was wired differently than most players, didn't get nervous when a game was on the line. He was always cool under pressure with his care free attitude (Similar to Grant Fuhr I would say). Really good player to have in a game 7 winner takes it all showdown.

Agree 100%, that's one of the reasons that many of these 1960s and 1970s photos are so awesome.
The players had character, were easy recognizable. The masks were awesome, today there's no soul, no personality.

I think dumping Gartner for Anderson was a great trade for Neil Smith.

Edmonton Oilers (WHA) 1978/79 team photo. Check out the guy in the front: captain Paul Shmyr. I don't know the whole story, but Shmyr, a Canadian of Ukranian decent, wanted to wear a "K" instead of the traditional Captain's "C" (inspired by the Soviet/Russian jerseys of the day). And the league / team actually let him!

Wow, great find! Shmyr had a great year that final WHA season, with the best plus/minus on the Oilers (+37), 47 points from the blue-line, and the made the WHA All-Star team.

How is it that nearly everyone in the crowd in the MacKinnon vs. Smith pic above is wearing a jersey, and a red one at that? I see a few with the white "C" but all the rest have black. Is a jersey a required dress code to get into a game now?

Ironically it looks like a game where the Flames wore their throw backs from the 80's. Notice the one guy off to the right in a white avalanche jersey.
