Where did the sticks branded "Toronto" and "Montreal" originate? I've only ever seen Soviets with them. And what's the deal with naming sticks after cities? Back in the 80s, my club hosted a Soviet team and one of their players left a "Mockba" branded twig in the bench. It was pretty beaten up, so I left it there and have always regretted not grabbing it and holding onto it for posterity.

These sticks originated from Finland (Toronto and Montreal). In the mid 1970s the Finnish hockey sticks started to compete with the North American brands among the pro players (WHA & NHL).

North American brands like Sher-Wood, Northland, Victoriaville, Louisville, Canadien, Christian bros. and CCM started to get challenged by Finnish stick makers like Koho, Karhu/Titan and Toronto. Koho at the time made up for 75% of the imported hockey sticks to North America, the other 25% was divided between Titan and Toronto.

Later on there were other European brands that entered the North American market, but weren't all that successful. Montreal (Finland), Torspo (Finland) and Jofa (Sweden - more succesful when it came to helmets and shoulder pads for example), Very few, if any Czechoslovakian (Artis & Forward) and Soviet (Mockba) sticks entered the market. Although I remember that Mats Naslund in Montreal used to play with Torspo for a few years, and Glenn Anderson played with Artis for a while in Edmonton.

However, Finland had an impact, and there was an investigation made by the department of the treasury in the USA to determine if the import and sales of the Finnish hockey sticks was hurting the American hockey stick market. This came after a complaint by the North American hockey stick manufacturers of lost sales. They alleged significant losses to Koho.

The Finnish hockey sticks were generally more expensive, but Koho earned a good reputation and sold well, later on of course, Titan managed to have guys like Gretzky and Bossy playing with their sticks.

But why the names, Toronto and Montreal ? I have not researched that, but logically these are and were two of the largest hockey markets available, so I guess it was only logical to name the sticks after these two iconic hockey teams/cities.

T Although I remember that Mats Naslund in Montreal used to play with Torspo for a few years.

It was more than a few years. As far as I recall, Naslund used Torspo sticks his entire time in Montreal. When he returned to the NHL with Boston he used a Titan twig.

Kjell Dahlin, who's brief NHL career overlapped with Naslund's in Montreal also used Torspo.

EDIT: Actually just found a pic of Naslund from 1988-89 or '89-'90 and he's using at Titan. He also used Titan at the 1991 Canada Cup.

The 1959-60 Japanese Olympic team:
latest

In January / February 1960, they toured the US and Canada (mainly Alberta & BC, Canada), playing games against local teams right before and after the Games in Squaw Valley, California.

Their only win was 8-6 over the Brandon Wheat Kings. It appears their closest games otherwise were a 4-4 tie with the Lethbridge Maple Leafs, and a 10-9 loss to the Pacific Coast Amateur League All Stars (at Vancouver). Less impressive was their 9-1 loss to Victoria Navy, their 17-2 loss to the Central Alberta Hockey League All Stars (at Lacombe, Alberta, of all places), and their 12-1 loss to the Soviet Union at Squaw Valley.

At these same 1960 Games, the US upset the Soviets (not for the last time, ha!) with a 3-2 win. Pictured here is Bill Christian scoring the winning goal with five minutes remaining:

Since you posted Bill Christian, here is his son, 1980 Olympian Dave Christian... one of the handful of USA 1980 members who distinguished themselves in the NHL...
