Here is a photo I came across recently.

AP_435468910839.jpg

On Oct. 24, 1935 Blackhawks' center Tom Cook is posed in action as he gets trim for the NHL hockey season. Tom Cook (not one of the HHOF Bill & Bun Cook brothers) joined Chicago in 1930 and led the NHL team in scoring in his rookie year. The following three seasons he was 2nd in team scoring, twice to Johnny Gottselig and once to Paul Thompson and then in 1935 he trailed those two and HHOFer Howie Morenz in team scoring. In his sophomore year he scored a goal and a team-tying lead in playoff assists with 3 in their 1931 Stanley Cup Finals run. He also scored in the Blackhawks first ever Stanley Cup championship postseason in 1934, the year prior to the above photo.

September 21, 1979 – Bobby Hull in a New York Rangers uniform creating a scoring chance against the AIK (Sweden) goalie Gunnar Leidborg

Sorry, to correct you on this one RGO but that is actually a Winnipeg Jets uniform that Bobby Hull is wearing. Although the small print indicates 1978-79, the game was actually from 1977 when the Jets were playing a number of exhibition games in Sweden and Finland in September of that year. Nevertheless, this is a great find as the picture is in color whereas most of them available from those games are in black and white.

I worry for any regular user of this forum who's seeing this picture for the first time. Perhaps you should consult a doctor, no?

:D Well, I don't count "Doctor No's" avatar as having seen it before. His avatar is minus the Bruin in the picture, plus giving the photo an exact date also counts for something. ;)

Thanks for the correction. You are right. The photo is from exactly two years earlier, from a tournament called Volkswagen Cup. I for some reason was thinking of DN-Cup where Hull played for NY Rangers, but that was in September 1981. :thumbu:

1980s - Glenn Anderson sliding into Billy Smith?

That's not Billy Smith. The goaltender here is Mark Fitzpatrick. This is likely taken in the 1989-90 season. He was dealt to the Islanders in the Kelly Hrudey deal late in the 1988-89 campagin. This could be from that season, but I'm not sure if he ever got full equipment in Islander colours that late in the season. Midway through the following year he switched from the helmet and cage to a painted mask, so its somewhere in that window.

I always find it weird when I see known painted mask guys started off as cage and helmet guys

Kirk McLean did, Mike Richter did. Felix Potvin, Ed Belfour.

They look like totally different people.

1979/80 - Gordie Howe of the Hartford Whalers and Phil Esposito of the New York Rangers. Prior to that season, the last time the two played against each other was during the 1970/71 season when Howe played for the Detroit Red Wings and Esposito was a member of the Boston Bruins.

Espo is hanging on to Gordie because everyone one else was to fast for Espo to skate with.

You can add Andy Moog to the list.

To me the, strangest of all of them is Richard Brodeur. Brodeur was dealt to Hartford late in his career and remained wearing a helmet and cage for the six regular season games he played. He went from wearing a Cooper helmet, which he wore for the bulk of his career to a JOFA helmet (which he wore in the 1982 run to the Final.) He then faced the Montreal Canadiens in the playoffs, and began the series in a helmet and cage and then changed to a Greg Harrison mask - mid series, which is insane, particularly if you are familiar with the particularities of net minders - and then, for the final game of his NHL career, he wore a face mask.

1990s - Brett Marietti (C) of the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL) vs Hampton Road Admirals

trying to figure out more info about this pic. No reason why other than it being early ECHL.

I can't find any reference to a 32 playing goal for the Admirals. There's a bunch of non-numbered players in hockeydb that were probably emergency callups, but I would need more info on the year.

The Bud Ice hockey tie-in was probably 1997-98ish (only remember this because it was right after I got out of the military in late 1996), but it's still old enough that Marietti was wearing a Cooper lid. Goalie X wearing Louisville probably won't help much since most goalies were still using it in the late 90s. The patch on Marietti's left shoulder (or right as we are looking at it) could probably help pinpoint an exact year.
