Interesting interview with Molson (in French):

Dix ans plus tard, Geoff Molson salue sa décision | Marc Delbès | Hockey

Short story:

-Guy is extremely proud of himself and his decision of buying and managing the team
-Most of the article is about the entertainment aspect of the CH brand
-One relatively short mention at the end about winning an actual Stanley Cup

So... the article confirms some of the things we've been discussing on this board for years. The guy is really focused on maintaining and milking the brand. Putting a winning team on the ice is secondary.

Pretty much exactly what I thought the article would say before even opening this thread.

He should be proud from a business stand point. He out a lot of money on the line and has made a ton of money.

In fact, the Molson family made a real stupid move by selling the team in the first place.

The current CH brand was mostly implemented during Gillett's ownership. Molson is milking it to no end and this will not last forever.

But yeah, for now everthing looks good on the business front. We just have to ignore that this should be a freaking hockey team trying to win championships...

Disgusting.........miss the playoffs, 3 of 4 years, and he is happy. Haven't been to the 2nd round in 5 years, and he is happy....just awful folks, just awful.

Please Geoff, sell the team back to George Gillette, he actually tried to win the Cup!!

Unfortunately you are correct. I waited to see on this. Ultimately though, he really doesn't care about winning and it's clear from the recent articles he's given out. He's about profits and doesn't really care about the cup.

If any fans needed a reason to stop spending a dime on the team (attending games, merchandise), what more do you need?

Btw reddit, this place & highlights, you can get all your fix of the team.

Spending a penny on this franchise while this rich kid with no passion or care for the on-ice product is running the show is worse than shooting oneself in the foot.

The salary cap also helped. Before it, the Habs, and the league in general, sucked. Plus, the value of sports teams in general have been skyrocketing.

It still seemed like a lot of money at the time. Plus, Gillett, imo, thought he was getting out at its financial peak.

From a business point of view he's taken an already valuable product and doubled it's value. I feel like we are stuck with this dude for life. He would never want to sell something that makes him so much money.

I don’t know that I’d run the team a lot differently then Molson besides maybe firing MB just because he rubs me the wrong way and because I can.

Molson is a good businessman and has done a good job on the financial end of the Habs. He is not a hockey person and should have hired an experienced individual to run Hockey OPs instead of giving Bergevin free reign. A John Davison type executive is what the Habs need because Molson is clearly not the individual to keep an eye on Bergevin.

Written in French so I couldn't read it. But in the 10 years he has owned the Habs their value has shot up. For him to make hundreds of millions in profit and run the Canadiens. No doubt it is beyond awesome.
