The crappiness of the blog aside, this has been known in Flyerdom for a long time. His play fell off a cliff over the last three seasons, as did his attitude: prickly and dismissive in interviews, awful body language on the ice, murmurs that he is hard to deal with. The peak of that was one week in January where:

1. He was present but reportedly non-participatory during the team's "Casino Night" fan event, where he just hung out with his girlfriend in a corner and didn't engage with fans or teammates.
2. Reports came out a couple days after that night that the team was looking to trade him
3. The next day, he sat out of the Pride Night pregame skate

The Pride Night incident, more than anything, seemed like a f***-you from him to the franchise based on the timing. Granted, the Flyers are a shitshow and it's probably hard to give a damn when everyone you work for is a dunce. But Provorov's performance problems are not a lack of talent: They're mindset and attitude. So CBJ better be one hell of a fresh start.
Well, then, hell; maybe two wrongs will make a right and Babcock will beat him into compliance. :shakehead

My ire is slightly less after reading some of the Provorov value threads, notably this one where this was suggested and seemingly accepted by many posters (not everybody but it wasn't slammed by either team's fans):

KINGS get
Provorov

FLYERS get
2024 first round pick
2023 3rd round pick
Helge Grans

That was with no retention. So we got him for the 2023 1st (#22) and a 2nd round pick in 2024/2025 and with 30% retention. That's alright I guess purely from the trade and on-ice perspective, if we assume and hope he can do better here in a slightly different role and new system.

The Canucks acquired Hronek for a similar price. Hard to tell whether it was the right decision till we see Provorov in action but Jarmo paid the market. Which is a bit disappointing since it looks like the Flyers made very well while the Kings found a way out of their cap quagmire.

Maybe that 2nd could've been kept off the table, but with lots of RFAs to retain after next season maybe he really valued the retention on Provorov. Small price to pay if it means havibg more flexibility for Johnson/Sillinger/etc. in Jarmo's head.

on second thought i don't think i can talk myself out of liking these two moves if the worst possible outcome is an old guy with a phallic-sounding name psychologically terrorizing a homophobe

Initially thought the fuss was about Hayes, was pleasantly surprised to see it was Provorov. The price point isn’t my favorite but I can’t deny the potential upside. At this point I’m happy to let Jarmo take some swings and if we crash and burn, whatever.

Off-ice/pride night issues are of course a concern but I’m not going to delve into that.

If it was just the player without the off-ice garbage, I would be thrilled. I legitimately believe he's going to make this team better on the ice.

It's the rest I don't care for. Particularly coming so quickly after the question marks with Babcock. It could work out exceptionally for us and I hope it does, but that's two dubious calls back to back and so I'm concerned.
What’s his problems off the ice ? Serious question .. if all we are referring to is the pride thing, that’s not a Provorov thing , it’s a league problem which they learned a lesson on . People are tired of corporate messaging , you saw it with Budweiser , now seeeing it with Target . Players shouldn’t be put in the situation to be honest .

It is 100% a Provorov thing. Nobody had a problem with it before he decided to make it a Big Issue.

Werenski, Provorov and Bean depth chart on the left side is really good as long as Provorov can get back to the level he was a few years ago. Even if he doesn't quite get there, that group should still be good enough.

Right side is another story. Waiting for Jiricek to get ready and for Gudbranson buyout I guess?

The odds of a Gudbranson buyout are... at best low. If we could somehow get Blankenburg to stay healthy we'd be in pretty good shape - but that's like wishing we could get Boqvist to play a shutout game.

Provorov isn’t a customer, he is an employee of the league and the franchise he plays for. Participating in Pride Night is, in my humble opinion, a work obligation based upon your contract.

Personally I don’t have any sympathy for those who whine about corporate messaging. Vote with your wallet and move on.

Also, I am 99% sure that Gavrikov will haul a higher AAV than what we will pay Provorov after retention.

Is Gavrikov a better player than Provorov ? No? He’s not! He’s a better defensive player, but Provorov is way better all around
Apparently the Kings nearly have a deal in place to extend Gavrikov for 2 years at $5.7m.

Provorov at $4.7m for two years is MUCH better.

Jarmo did great, gotta admit

The pride thing is a PR problem but there are Provorov problems that can affect the team morale. He's a sour puss with a huge ego, not a friendly guy.

The scary thing is when he insisted he should be getting all the top minutes including top PP time in Philly, this despite being an objectively poor PP QB. It shows a lack of self awareness. He shouldn't be a QB here either and Babs might need to put him in his place.

I might be crazy, in fact I probably am, but I kind of think Gudbranson might work well under Babcock. He did have his best year in his final year in Calgary playing under Sutter and he wasn't as bad as he's been advertised last year. Still was in no way good, but was better than I thought he would be

In a vacuum, I actually love this move. I've followed the Flyers for years so I know how good a happy Provorov can be. Now, he might sulk and whine at being 2LD to Werenski and not getting any PP time, but c'est la vie. What bothers me is the optics (giving other fans ammo to go "lol, Columbus") and the fact as a member of the LGBT community, I hate that there's a player who openly hates people me on the roster. I'm still here til Babcock's official but damn is Jarmo making it hard for me.

Ammo for a week or 2 until the mobs move onto something else. By the draft noone will be talking about Columbus again but the fans of the team

Yaroslavl, Russia to Philadelphia. I figure there's a chance that that city could wear a young man out whose not totally prepared for it. Good chance he arrives here and let's out a big sigh of relief. Relax, shut up and play hockey young man...just play hockey.

All things considered, I'm in favor of it. Korpisalo and Gavrikov were expiring assets we turned into a top 4 d-man while saving cap space and maintaining flexibility. However, I really think we had the chance to turn 22 into a difference-maker by trading up into the first half of the 1st round which I think would have been a much better use of the assets.

A final point to consider, Provorov is basically on a prove-it contract that bridges us to the next generation of D so he probably gets traded at the deadline when we are out of contention again either this year or next, so the final value is probably TBD unless he plays well enough that he earns a top pairing grade and forces us to extend him. I can't see a way he stays on the team with Jircek, Mateychuck, Svozil and Ceulemans all on their way in the next two years plus raises for the young forwards.
