The Voyageurs select:

D, Jiri Bubla

d850c1b6cd5d99e85ffbf7704ab11098.jpg

Mobile, physically strong, slick skating and thinks the game on a high level with his impressive hockey sense. He excelled at quick transitions and loved using his accurate outlet pass to create scoring opportunities for his team. He was a solid point man on the PP as well and had a heavy shot, so we plan on utilizing him there.

He won 3 World Championship Gold medals and was twice named to the World Championship All-Star teams (1978, 1979) as well as being named the Top defenseman in the 1979 tournament.

Defenseman James Patrick

4871-131Fr.jpg

Biographical Information courtesy of James Patrick Stats | Hockey-Reference.com

Position: D ▪ Shoots: Right
Height: 6-2 ▪ Weight: 202 lbs.
Born: June 14, 1963 (Age 50) in Winnipeg, Manitoba

Stats On Patrick courtesy of James Patrick Stats | Hockey-Reference.com:

-639 points in 1280 career games
-1 Top 10 Finish in Plus Mine
-1280 Games rank him 93rd all time

Legends Of Hockey:

As property of the New York Rangers, who drafted him ninth overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft, Patrick then made his debut with the Blueshirts, a move that marked the beginning of more than nine seasons on Broadway. After much anticipation from Ranger fans and management, he settled in as a blueliner with good technical skills and an outstanding ability to make smooth transitions between offense and defense. Once again in 1987 Patrick represented his homeland on the international stage, as part of Canada's series victory of the Soviet Union at the 1987 Canada Cup.

Patrick's personal grounding, intelligence and strong positional play have allowed him to sustain 20+ years of NHL play. He left the Rangers early in 1993-94 for a brief stint in Hartford before heading West to join the Calgary Flames for four seasons. Since then, Patrick brought his veteran blueline ppresence to the Buffalo Sabres where remained through the 2003-04 season before calling it a career in the summer of 2005.
Joe Pelletier:

Patrick, who suffered from the digestive disease colitis, was an exceptional talent. He was an excellent skater in every way - speed, agility and power. His skating was amplified by his superior puck handling ability, often rushing the puck. He had a great point shot, always kept low for tips and rebounds.

That is how Patrick picked up most of his points, because he was not an elite passer. He was never great at the perfect breakout pass from his own zone. His instinct was always to skate with the puck. Once he reached the neutral zone he would either dump the puck into the offensive zone, or just drive all the way to the net, whether the defenseman should be or not.

I finish my 1st pairing on defense by picking Jerry Korab.

Also known as "King Kong" Korab should be quite the physical presence for my team.

The Blades select Vladimir Vikulov, the right winger who made two game-winning goals in the series, after leading the Soviet league in goals and the world championships in points that year; often a right winger for the Soviet national team, Vikulov won seven world championships, two Olympic golds and, himself, 101 points in 85 international matches, a 6-time Soviet 1st or 2nd team all star and two-time world championship all star, 2nd in Soviet scoring in the 1976 Canada Cup.

Viktor Polupanov said:
Invention, initiative - Vikulov had these qualities over everyone. He was always in motion, searching, offering himself to receive a pass, aiding the defense, if necessary. Having received the puck at the red line, he doesn't wait for numbers to attack - initiates the attack himself, takes over the game. Physically strong, agile, nimble, not afraid of the physical game, and almost never loses battles. But always very polite, correct - is very seldom sent off!

Weaknesses? His shot. Ah...Vikulov's shooting - the butt of many jokes! How often we laughed at him, trying to get him to shoot on goal from the blueline (18 meters) - it was useless. Volodya does not favor hard shots.

For him, a goal from far away is not a goal. To deke the defenseman in the "slot", to "lay down" the goaltender with a clever feint, and flip the puck into an empty net - this, he considers a real success. Volodya doesn't always hunt for goals - he is not greedy for them. Even when he is in a good position, he will gladly give the puck to his linemate - let him have the goal. Vikulov doesn't seem to mind.

Not sure why none of us found room for Red Sullivan, C in our bottom 6s in the ATD, but I'll draft him here.

On a 1958 poll of NHL coaches, Sullivan was named best defensive forward, best hustler/hardest worker, and 2nd best penalty killer in the NHL.

He also finished top 10 in NHL points twice, top 10 in NHL assists 3 times, and went to 5 All-Star games on merit.

Mark Giordano, D.

His Norris record looks quite nice now at 1st, 6th, 8th, 10th (plus a trival # of votes on 2 more occasions).
