I’m a big Brodin fan and the drop to Maatta is huge. Nino is solid but Kessel’s scoring is elite.

It’s fairly even but I think both teams say no

Brodin is doing well this year and the drop to Maatta is bad, but upgrading from Nino to Kessel would be HUGE. Especially since the Wild need right handed forwards. I'd probably do it.

Starting to hate the Leafs
Minnesota says yes. Kessel has been a bit of a playoff choker but if he can snap that and light it up with the Wild come april/may then I could see this deal being a massive win for the Wild.

Difference of $1.5m isn't really evened out... Minnesota says no. Not interested in older players. Been there, done that.

Kessel is almost a ppg playoff performer so I would say he is a choker

Can you define 'playoff choker' for me?

Kessel isn't a playoff choker at all. That's hilarious.

Eh, it's not bad, but it doesn't really get me all that excited. I've seen worse, I think a more logical move between the two teams would be based around Brassard. Although looking at how good Staal, Koivu and Fehr have been, I don't even know if center is a need for them right now.

I feel like Pittsburgh would want no part of this, even if Brodin is a huge upgrade over Maatta.

He's a better playoff performer than anyone on the leafs...

Aaaaaaaand this is why Toronto fans have a bad rep on these boards. Y’all live in a bubble and don’t care about anything other than Toronto.

That's a deal that MN does if they think that this is the year. I don't think they think that.

Deal is fair, in general.
This was my initial reaction as well, but Kessel is under contract at a good cap hit for the next 4 seasons. The qualms I have are:

1.) When is his play likely to fall off? He's kind of a freak so I wouldn't be shocked to see him live up to his contract for the duration, but it's hard to say.
2.) Who do we play him with? Ideally he'd be with Granlund, so do you switch Granlund to LW and play one of Zucker/Parise on the right?

Maata's skating worries me as well. The overall mobility of our blueline is a major strength right now, and I'm not all that comfortable with either Maata or Seeler taking Brodin's minutes.

I don't hate it, though.

The Penguins are already paying out the nose for their defense. Adding more money to their defense at the expense of their forwards would not be a good idea.

Brodin and Maata have almost identical cap hits. Brodin's contract is just a year shorter.

Good point, but I meant that the Penguins should be dropping salary on defense at this point. Trading Kessel (one of the few forwards who produce for the Pens outside of Sid and Geno) on a really wonderful contract would be a mistake if the package included getting worse at forward and better on defense. In my opinion.

Understandable. While I don't think Nino would fully replace Kessel's scoring, I do think he'd do very well in Pittsburgh's top-6.

Nino is the Wild card in all this. I don't know what to make of him anymore. Unlike last year, he seems to behealthy and moving well. If this trade were to go through we could easily be laughing at the Pens for getting fleeced, or they could be laughing at us for not making more out of him.

In the past I would be more reluctant to lose him as he used to be one of the few physical forwards on MN, but Greenway, Ek, and Foligno have beefed us up so I have less worries there.

Don't know how solid of a second pairing Dumba/Maata would be, though. Yikes!

The pens defense this year cost 28 million which equates to 35% of the cap max. At no point in the last 10 years have they come close to winning with this high a percentage of the cap spent on defense.

2018/19 = 35%
2017/18 = 32%
*2016/17 = 29%
*2015/16 = 21%
2014/2015 = 31%
2013/2014 = 32%
2012/2013 = 29%
2011/2012 = 29%
2010/2011 = 30%
2009/2010 = 25%
*2008/2009 = 29%

The three years that have the * are the years they won the cup. When JR came to the penguins he started shedding defense. Not resigning guys like Orpik, Niski, and Martin ended up giving guys like Dumo and Maatta a chance. The money he saved by not spending on defense he was able to use for forwards. This formula won. He has thrown that formula out the window. He has now a very over-priced defense that is eating up the biggest chunk of salary in both numbers and percentage of the cap, in the last 10+ years.

When teams win championships they pay the guys who won them. This happens in all sports and is why you see teams like Chicago and LA struggling. The Pens d in 2015/2016 was looking pretty bad, then the whole team got going and they brought in Schultz, who has been resigned since. I don't think 28 million is that much when you consider Letang is 7.25 of that.
