He relied on having Fiala. This year his numbers are down because he's expected to be the "guy" on his line and he's not playing like a 7x7 player. I'd be fine if he got Ek's contract, but this contract could really look bad if they don't go find someone to play on his line.
This is obviously a bet on years 3-7.

And if Boldy plays with the same quality of line mates for all 7 years as he is now, then something failed on the organizational level.

It’s a cap world. Better to get the number in at 7 now rather than 9 something in 2 years
That is not true and you know it. Or else the rest of the league would be signing contracts like these because everyone's in a "cap world".

Minny are betting that Boldy becomes a player of 9M in today's cap. It's bold and therefore warrants some criticism.

If his quality of linemates affects his production that much, this deal is not a good one for the Wild.

Quality of linemates affects every player in the League, save a few.

Boldy no longer has Fiala, yet we only see a slight drop in production. He is ascending.

Are we not seeing the rest of the league signing contract like this? Stutzle, Norris, J. Hughes and Suzuki are some recent examples.

It's definitely a newer trend, but Boldy isn't the first.

Not everyone would, because not everyone believes the same thing. Not everyone jumps on even objectively good ideas right away. That said, many teams are signing contracts like this for their best young players, and the trend seems to be growing. There is a degree of risk involved when doing this (not every player improves), and as long as that exists, some people will continue to pay old, potentially declining players (because they think the risk of them dropping off is lesser).

Can tell those who do not see much of him. He’s trending towards star level in this league and has taken massive jumps in development year over year even talking pre-draft.

As he continues to grow into his frame and tunes his shot, he will be dynamic.

They only bought 2 UFA years and 5 RFA years with this deal. What I'm saying is that you could have technically offered 5 years x 1 million and he'd have no other options. Why does nobody get this?
I believe they bought 1 RFA year, 4 RFA with Arbitration and 2 UFA years. If he continues on his pace those RFA Arbitration years will definitely not be at 1 million.

Seems a tad risky, but the dude has a lethal shot and seems destined to be a 35+ goal guy. Goal scorers get paid, so could be a bargain on the back half of that deal if he’s a lock for 35 every year.

atm is probably worth half that money.
again with these contracts... truck load of money for 21 year old with 80+ career games in the NHL

sign them long, sign them early
these 7 x 7 or 7 x 8 mill contracts
have become standard contracts
for young promising talent..

in finland we have this saying called;
järki käteen!

Do that and you can completely cross of him re-signing again, and you would make a horrible name for yourself as a GM as far as players are concerned.

why there is a salary cap anyways
just remove it allready.

every eam in the NHL
will top heavy, thats the trajectory
with these contracts, that former player was ( or who ever it was ) right who talked about it few days ago.

He's 21 dude. His number blow Fiala's numbers at that age out of the water.

This is how it was until the Leafs situation with Matthews and Marner. Although I'm exaggerating with the 1M figure. Now UFa level salaries are expected for RFAs

Buyouts on players under 26 are 1/3 of contract value. If he all of the sudden turns into a pumpkin, they can just buyout his contract for peanuts.

It all depends on the years. If Minnesota wanted more of your kind of RFA salary level, a 2 year deal was very much an option. These contracts can just as easily work out better for the team than player. Just have to make very calculated decisions.

The trick is to not pay them full UFA value, but a lot of these deals are really pushing up against that.
