Advantage Marner: slightly better play maker, better 5v5 stats.

Advantage Rantanen: Better goal scorer, better on the PP, his playoffs last year was ridiculous.

Overall, slight advantage Rantanen. But it's very very close.

(I don't consider PK in the equation. PK specialists make league-minimum and it's not something I consider with superstar offensive players).

94 > 87?

Marner is a year younger and has scored more points in less games. By any honest measure, Marner is the more impactful player.

MacKinnon > Tavares
MacKinnon > Kadri
MacKinnon > Bozak

You can argue Mac broke out two years ago but prior to that Mitch played with Tyler Bozak. Clear advantage Rantanen as far as centres go, across the board.

Be honest.
Is MacKinnon really that much different than Tavares. They are very close, with edge going to Mac. And yes Rantanen had the better pace, but obviously you knew that. Be honest. And they are the same draft year so it’s pretty weak for you to try and use age as an argument. And now you’re using total games for point totals when I quite clearly only addressed the past 2 seasons. you are extremely hypocritical and blatantly moving the goalposts. So please explain how Marner is so much more impactful.

But I’m honestly not surprised to see this kind of post from you.

Is MacKinnon really much different than Tavares? Is that a serious question? They’re completely different types of players? Pucks skills and IQ may be similar but Mac has game breaking wheels that make his skills much more dynamic. He’s dangerous in more areas of the ice and that creates more room for his linemates.

I don’t have enough time to explain all the advantages MacKinnon has over Nazem Kadri, who Mitch was well over PPG over the second half of last season with.. of Tyler Bozak, who will still be his most common centre to this point in his career.

You made no mention of pace. Given how I’ve seen you respond to those who’ve used pace in discussions about one of Marner’s teammates in relation to missed time injured, I didn’t think it’d be a road you’d go down. That would be hypocritical of you.

You’re claiming I moved goal posts but that’s the first I quoted you on this? How does that work?

Re; age - it’s not a huge age disparity as much as it was just a matter of Marner needing more time to fill out. He came to camp at like 167lbs his first year. Particularly in his rookie year, he got banged up a lot. He was always going to need more time than that of someone with a 6’4 frame.

Arbitrarily evaluating just two seasons makes your objective quite clear.

No need for personal attacks. If you were indeed being honest and genuine, you wouldn’t feel the need.

Marner had a better rookie season and that’s it. Since then and going forward I see Mikko outplaying Marner every season, and the difference will be even more apprent come playoff time.

100pts for Rants every year from here on out, book it. Will establish himself as a consensus top5 wing this year, also book it.

Rants definitely could be a top 5 winger in the NHL by next season, no reason to to be saucy.

I would take Marner on the Islanders, the players are close enough though that I'm uncomfortable calling one better than the other at this point. Might change my answer based on Rants contract.

Marner outscored Rantanen in 2 out of the 3 seasons they've each played.........his rookie season, and last season, which you seem to have forgotten about.

Both good players.

Marner is better.

First person to say ainec was a leaf fan saying marner but i see you ignored that and flamed the dude saying ranta. Please never cry about bias again.
 Actually, the person you’re referring to is a Habs (possibly Sens) fan who consistently trolls. I didn’t feed him. Oooops.

If you’re going to try and zing one at me, try not to trip on your own feet. Nice try, though. Do your homework if you’re going to try and attack me personally.. Because apparently that’s your objective?

Rantanen's a good player but I expect this won't be particularly close after this season. Marner will outproduce him significantly - I've got Marner at around 100 this year whereas Rantanen will probably finish in the 80 range if he plays a full season. Happy to have this take shoved in my face if I'm wrong!

If we assume equal contracts and you could take either guy in an expansion draft (to try and remove all the team and teammate and contract factors) I think I'd go Marner here. I think he's more of a driver.

But it's very close. Rantanen has proved how valuablge a player he is. Does Nathan MacKinnon ever become the 2nd best skater in the world if not for him?

Neither team trades either guy for the other, but in a vacuum again I htink i'd lean slightly Marner.
