So Sabourin cost us a 5th.

Lovely.

Lmao who the f*** cares. A 5th is so easy to add.

Also, if anything, Sabourin cost us Ebert. If we didn't sign Sabourin, we would have traded just a pick for Namestnikov and we'd have to trade Ebert/Sturtz and a pick if we wanted to add Reilly anyways.

Look we are not prepared to make the deal unless we can throw in a draft pick don't even bother asking.

Yah I know its a 5th round pick but .. seems like it had value to someone.

The Sabourin effect is felt again. At least we are not getting intimidated out of the rink.

Some posters still can't get over the Marleau trade. It's like they can't comprehend the difference between barely being able to pay a player for actually playing for us and paying someone to not play.

We could have played a couple young guys like Chlapik/Beaudin and Jaros/Lajoie over Namestnikov and Reilly and have saved Melnyk 3.1M in salary.

About a cost difference of 1M, but when you consider the future value of a 1st round pick in potential savings on a 3YR ELC, it's a no brainer cost-wise.

Maybe we'd be a worse team this year, but who cares. It's not like Namestnikov and Reilly are going to help us make the playoffs.

Even if you don't think the Leafs would trade Marleau to us if we outbid Carolina, there are about a billion better ways to spend an additional 3.1M than what Dorion has done, at the cost of a couple mid round picks mind you.

You are wrong again. At one point this year there were 6 healthy D in North America. Situations like that can happen. If you don’t have a couple contracts available it can screw you. But you obviously know more than anyone employed in the NHL, or who covers it, or is a broadcaster.

Here we go again with hfsens losing their **** over a late draft pick....

It's funny... it was exactly 1 year ago today that people were losing their **** over the 6th round pick we gave up for Nilsson.

The Dallas Stars gave up a 6th rounder for Alex Auld which became Mark Stone.

It doesn't happen often that those picks work out, but throwing them away like confetti doesn't help move the franchise forward. If this wasn't already a trend with Dorion a once off would probably be better accepted.

Except we're not throwing them like confetti. We still have more picks than we started with in 2020, with more surely to come at the deadline.

Maybe Dallas should have picked Mark Stone with their 5th round pick.

A 5th round pick is essentially a favour.

There are very few players on our team that we couldn’t trade and get back at least a 5th Rd pick. Combine that with the sheer number of picks we have, and players we are likely to flip out and it’s peanuts to us.

They only had 6 healthy D in NA under contract... and why was that? Because they only had 11 in total signed. And why was that? Think real hard, put the galactic brain to use.

Dorion left them vulnerable and unable to withstand only a few injuries.

The trade itself is fine but there should have been a couple of Mike Riellys kicking around in Belleville when needed and signed in the offseason. If they hadn't wasted contract spots on guys like Beaudin, Sabourin and Swartz they could have just given 2 way deals to Corrado and Percy and be done with it.

When Ebert was traded, Wolanin was already out long term. That left us with 10 guys to use, which is just not enough in a 82 game schedule and leaves Belleville in terrible shape when he have even a couple of injuries.

Don't love that he has another year left on his contract. Would have preferred an expiring deal.

Needed d help especially in Belleville, considering the contract situation I guess it makes sense. Hoping for a competitive market this year as ideally we become bigtime sellers

Whatever, this started with you saying the contract number isn’t a problem. There is only 1 team with 49 contracts so it seems to me that most GMs believe having more than 48 is a problem.

I liked Reilly back when he was a Columbus prospect but I never liked how he went college UFA.

At this point, he is what he is, we aren't getting a reclamation project like we did with Duclair. In a vacuum, it's fine I guess.

That's exactly what I'm saying. I was making fun of people who thought the Sens being up against the contract limit didn't matter. It was clearly limiting their options on player movements
