Oh please on average Dallas had way better players than sundins toronto had.

I am sure modano would win a cup with Renberg and Hoglund as linemates
Your arguing something that really isn’t worth arguing about. Modano led them in points in ‘99 with 23 points in 23 games, beating Hull by 8 and Lehtinen by 10. Sure he had the better linemates but that doesn’t mean he was simply better based on that, if anything he made them better.

Besides let’s not talk like Sundin was always around horrid teams. The 2002 team made it to the ECF basically without Sundin.....and he made it to the ECF in ‘99 only to fall to Buffalo.

This isn’t about who had Better players, it’s about who was. And your over exaggerating the affect Hull and Lehtinen had on Modano. As well as name dropping a bunch of players as “legends.” Modano was just as valuable to the Stars as Sundin to the Leafs, the difference is one had more support.

Modano - 1499 GP, 561 G, 813 A, 1374 points +114

Sundin - 1346 GP, 564, 785 A, 1349 points +73

That's 153 fewer games for Sundin, yet Sundin managed more goals and the assists are nearly identical.
Such an odd way to put it. A more accurate statement would have been "Modano has more assists and the goals are nearly identical".

Some food for thought for the "Modano had better teammates" crowd:

From 1995 to 2004 (ten seasons which roughly encompass both of their primes), Toronto scored more goals than Dallas (2,279 to 2,199).

During those years, only once did a Star (aside from Modano) score 70 points in a season, and only three times did someone even score 60 points. The Leafs had four and seven of those seasons (excluding Sundin) during that period.

Both players have led their teams in scoring by 20+ margins six times. But Modano has three years where he led his team in scoring by 30+ points (and one more where he led them in scoring by 28 points); Sundin only had one such season.

In summary - Sundin spent most of his prime on teams that were, on average, slightly higher scoring than Modano's Stars; Modano had fewer teammates with 60 and 70 point seasons; and Sundin led his team in scoring by smaller margins at their peaks.

The Stars were obviously a better team than the Leafs. But they were better because they had far superior defense. That didn't boost Modano's stats, it suppressed them.

Mats. He was more consistent. Even in his last full season he was a top 10 Centre in the NHl easily.

Who had the better quality linemates throughout their careers?
It’s worth noting that Modano out scored his teammates more frequently with more points than the second best. The linemates argument doesn’t really hold up much when both were the powerhouse of their line and offense.

Sundin also played on a higher scoring team and a system that complimented that, while Modano played in a strict defensive system and still put up quality numbers frequently.

Complaining about Renberg playing with Sundin in the 2001-02 season ignores a few very important points.

1) Sundin played with very productive wingers Thomas and Mogilny in the years surrounding 2002. Both had a Top-20 scoring season (Moginly was 15th and Thomas was 19th), as they posted 79, 73 and 63 points on Sundin's wing in the DPE.

2) That 2002 season that you're complaining about with Renberg is considered arguably Sundin's best season in the NHL.

3) The 47-56 points that Hoglund posted between 2000-2002 was pretty good production out of a scarce position in the DPE. Those numbers put him 21st-30th in scoring among LW's for those seasons.
