I don't really think anyone considers him a generational skater. Or at least they shouldn't.

He's likely a generational player because of what he can do with the puck at the speed he does.

If it was just a race mcdavid would have won, problem was he didn't have as good a position on the puck and wasn't going to get to the puck so he opted to engage to try to gain possession that way.
