Saw a recent post about McDavid vs Crosby in their first 6 seasons but how about Connor vs Ovi? Although his production has regressed since 2011, the first few years of Ovi's career was absolutely dynamite similar to Connor right now.
McDavid's stats and accolades (2016-2021):
- 2 Hart MVPs (2017, 2021*)
- 3 Ted Lindsay's (2017, 2018, 2021*)
- 3 Art Rosses (2017, 2018, 2021)
- 4 NHL First Teams (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021*)
- 2x Assists Leader (2017, 2021)
- 3x PPG Leader (2017, 2018, 2021)
- 195 goals and 379 assists for 574 points in 407 games played
- 1.41 points per game
- Seasons over 100 points: 4 (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021)
*= Not official yet but let's be real, who else is winning those awards this year other than Connor
Ovechkin's stats and accolades (2006-2011):
- 2 Hart MVPs (2008, 2009)
- 3 Ted Lindsay's (2008, 2009, 2010)
- Art Ross (2008)
- 2 Rocket Richards (2008, 2009)
- 5 NHL First Teams (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010)
- 3x PPG Leader (2008, 2009, 2010)
- 301 goals and 313 assists for 614 points in 475 games played
- 1.29 points per game
- Seasons over 100 points: 4 (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010)
I do expect McDavid to surpass Ovi on the all time list as Ovi's overall production has taken a dip post-2011 while McDavid is probably going to be the best or among the best players in the world for the next several years but in terms of their early accomplishments, it's as close as it gets
