Saw a recent post about McDavid vs Crosby in their first 6 seasons but how about Connor vs Ovi? Although his production has regressed since 2011, the first few years of Ovi's career was absolutely dynamite similar to Connor right now.

McDavid's stats and accolades (2016-2021):
- 2 Hart MVPs (2017, 2021*)
- 3 Ted Lindsay's (2017, 2018, 2021*)
- 3 Art Rosses (2017, 2018, 2021)
- 4 NHL First Teams (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021*)
- 2x Assists Leader (2017, 2021)
- 3x PPG Leader (2017, 2018, 2021)
- 195 goals and 379 assists for 574 points in 407 games played
- 1.41 points per game
- Seasons over 100 points: 4 (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021)

*= Not official yet but let's be real, who else is winning those awards this year other than Connor

Ovechkin's stats and accolades (2006-2011):
- 2 Hart MVPs (2008, 2009)
- 3 Ted Lindsay's (2008, 2009, 2010)
- Art Ross (2008)
- 2 Rocket Richards (2008, 2009)
- 5 NHL First Teams (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010)
- 3x PPG Leader (2008, 2009, 2010)
- 301 goals and 313 assists for 614 points in 475 games played
- 1.29 points per game
- Seasons over 100 points: 4 (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010)

I do expect McDavid to surpass Ovi on the all time list as Ovi's overall production has taken a dip post-2011 while McDavid is probably going to be the best or among the best players in the world for the next several years but in terms of their early accomplishments, it's as close as it gets

OV all the way. Goals are WAY more valuable than a bunch of secondary assists.

A line with peak OV + McDrai would be absolutely unstoppable.

Close, but Ovechkins goal scoring is too hard to pass on imo.

Ovi gets the edge with the playoffs. It's really unfortunate Edmonton hasn't figured out how to build a team around their core. That to me should be easier than finding the core (basically the polar opposite of the Flames).

Ovechkin. His peak was so unreal. McDavid had his monster season this year, but it's not quite enough to surpass OV. Add in playoffs and Ovechkin gets the edge.

I do however agree with OP, McDavid is probably going to surpass Ovechkin without injuries. But their first 6 seasons, it's Ovechkin for me.

Yeah I'm leaning a bit more towards OV as well. His run between 2008-2010 was truly something special it's a shame his game has relatively fallen off after that (still the best goal scorer but his overall numbers haven't been the same)

OV.

McDavid is the best player in the world, but even this season his production exploded in the 2nd half of the "season": right when Drai was put on his line. OV wasn't attached to another hart winner, actually he's never even played with a top 10 player (probably not even top 20, the way Backstrom is viewed around here). While according to Oiler fans, Drai is #2 in the league. OV also was throwing out 200+ hits a season so he could impact the game in at least one other way apart from scoring, while McDavid doesn't add anything when he's kept off the score sheet. And I'm not going to blame McDavid for the Oilers not advancing in the playoffs, but he hasn't been good individually. Below PPG, especially after the regular seasons he's put up, isn't good enough. Caps didn't go anywhere as a team, but at least OV was doing his part (50pts in 37 GP, over PPG in every playoffs).

Also, OV won the Calder directly against Crosby. I know people love to brush it off as "just a Calder", but if Crosby had won then it would've always been brought up as part of his complete trophy collection.

I feel like early career Ovi was such a physical freak that I honestly don't see an argument for McDavid here. McDavid produced a little bit more, but Ovi has a massive advantage from his goal scoring, size and physicality IMO.

Ovechkin was quick, in addition to hitting everyone he could. Not as quick as McDavid but he was explosive and it helped him barrel through or around defense. If he hadn't been suspended in 2010, he might've set a post-2006 lockout points record.

Ovi in a regular season not by much but pretty clearly. When you take the playoffs into account as some other posters have mentioned, it shouldn't be even close. 50 in 37 games for Ovy, I doubt McDavid will ever reach that to be honest. So Ovi

Yep, and on top of that if you take the playoffs into account (50 points in 37 games for Ovi) and it shouldn't be that close tbh.

I'm thinking Ovechkin's playoff performances is the biggest difference here. They probably have similar regular season value.

Ovechkin by a clear margin. You're talking about 100+ extra goals, and a player who was much better in the playoffs than McDavid.

McDavid might get there. I wouldn't put him there yet.

Both of them are like video game 99 overall players in real life. But Ovi seemed literally unstoppable in his peak.

Mcdavid. One of those 100 pt seasons was during a shortened year and he was 3 pts away from 5 in a row if not for Covid.

Oilers fan (Caps are my second team) taking Ovi. McDavid will have the better career (outside of Ovi potentially surpassing Gretzky's goal record) but peak Ovi was a beast.
