YEAH MAN! McDavid’s so trash!

Maybe next season he’ll have 396 points thru his first 47 games instead of a astonishingly low, 53 points.

396/47 = 8.42 ... maybe that’ll be good enough for you.

McDavid is top-10 in scoring. If McDavid has a 3 point night in his next game, he's top 5 in the league in scoring. It's even possible he could win another Ross if he goes next level (and some slumps from the people above him)

So, no. He is not a disappointment.

Last year he had 1.22PPG. He is only 21. You would expect an upward PPG....his year 2 is 0.15+ more than his year 1....so maybe we could expect around 1.35 this season. But he is only at 1.13. Disappointing?

In Crosby's 2nd year he got 120 points in 79 games. = 1.52
In his 3rd year he got 72 points in 53 games. =1.36

I never looked at him the same since that disappointing drop....

Well there's your problem...

You are expecting his PPG to increase each year, thats just not realistic for a top end player. Perhaps for a younger player who is in the process of establishing himself, you can expect a gradual upward trend, not that a step back in production should be associated with disappointment even for them. It's just crazy to expect a player to continually increase their production until a certain point. There's going to fluctuations and that doesn't mean the player is getting worse or its disappointing, thats just the nature of sport and even life in general. I'm not even going to touch the fact that we are just past the mid point of the season, my brain might explode.

Gretzky in year 3 had a 2.65 PPG, in year 4 he had a 2.45PPG. Was that disappointing?

Oh god... I just saw that you dismissed Ovechkin example because it was his sophomore season, like a sophomore slump is an actual f***ing thing...

I don't know what you are expecting he's doing his job and playing well but this is still a team sport and the Oilers aren't very good as a team.

He got injured and scoring went down in 07-08.

Scoring this year is actually higher than 06-07, yet McDavid's production is down as well. I'm sure McDavid will be fine though, he'll still likely be a top 40 player ever

You're basing your assessment of the player on the progression of his ppg over less than three years?

Your complaint about him is that the interval is not equal and consistent from one year to the next?

I am almost speechless.

Give me one player that would not be traded straight-up for McDavid -- there are none.

He is anything but disappointing.

No it's not. As of right now exactly 2.95 gpg and in 06/07 as well. But 06/07 had a lot more pp so the stars in 06/07 point totals should be higher.

Crosby > Mcdavid

Based on the first 3 years... Crosby was just an absolute stud back then.

Can we even still call him Sid the Kid? Time flies.

you mean either 4th overall Poolparty or 3rd overall Draisaitl on his wing, and 7th overall Nurse, 19th overall Klefbom or 4th overall Larsson feeding him the puck?

Poor guy!
Your aware something like 70% of the nhl are first round picks eh.

The Oilers are ranked 31st in the NHL in PP Opportunities-for with 126 (Avs 177, Penguins 174., Blackhawks 169, Jets 169, Lightning 164... ). The Oilers are on pace for 220 PP Opportunities-for.

The Pittsburgh Penguins had 463 PP Opportunities in 2006/7.

2017/18 McDavid is on pace for 246:00 PP TOI vs 2006/2007 Crosby of 461:10

For those using an increase of PPs this season being used as some way to minimize McDavid, it's really not even close. Basically take Crosby's 61 PP points cut them in half, then take his even strength scoring rate and add it.

Crosby 2006/7
79 games
120 Total Points
61 PP points
59 ES points (14:40 TOI/GP, .75Points/GP)

remove half of the PP points - 30 points
add 215:00 of ES time, so 215/14.67 which was Crosby average ES TOI/GP = 15 games x .75 ESP/GP = +11 points

120 - 30 + 11 = 101 points or there abouts. McDavid doesn't have a Sergei Gonchar type dman either.

Anyways... to answer the OP, I would say 97% of Oiler fans are very happy with McDavid's play this year.

I'd like to see where that number came from. Based on Find Out How Many NHL Draft Picks Make it to the NHL. which uses the 90s as an example, I roughly counted 36.6%

Round 1 = 63% = 19.53 players
Round 2 = 25% = 7.75 players
Round 3-9 = 12% = 26.04 players
For a total of 53.32 players on avg that will stay as NHLers as a career per draft.

What's the graph about?... girlfriends per week? Whatever it is... sure looks like McDavid sucks at it.

Yeah I really didn't feel like labelling it, its easy enough to interpret. It's not meant to suggest McDavid isn't as good as those players, simply to show the fluctuations in PPG through the career of an elite player. I could have put more work into and got the season adjusted numbers, I should have excluded McDavid all together because @illpucks is just going to completely miss the point, my bad.

Hockey reference is incorrect as they include shootout goals in their calculations. The GPG average right now is 5.80, compared to 5.75 in 07, iirc.

Also, while there may have been more PPs in 07, there wasn't 3v3 OT either where star players disproportionately pick up points.

Individually McDavid delivers in spades, fans can't get enough of his high speed rushes up ice and the points he creates, but until he figures out a way to "will" his team to win real hockey people will see the flaw that keeps him from being a so-called generational talent.

IMO he has yet to really hit his stride this season. Part of that is that he hasn't been looking for his own shot enough, part of it is because we are getting no offense from the blueline and part of it is because we aren't getting many PP opportunities and when we do our PP straight up sucks. Of the 9 players ahead of him in scoring he is easily behind them when it comes to PP points. McDavid has all of 11 while the next lowest is Tavares with 15 followed by Gaudreau at 17 and MacKinnon at 18. Everyone else has at least 10 more PP points than Connor does, with Kessell having a whopping 20 more PP points. If the Oilers can get their POS PP to start clicking he could start to make a surge up the scoring list.
