.906 career
.910 last 5yrs
.919 last 2yrs
.925 this year

and he's not even being used in traditional "sheltered" matchups - he just gets the backends of back to backs no matter who the opponent is (and always has a tired team in front of him).

Still think Sparks is better but hard to hate on McBackup, even when he had a .900% save percentage.

I did a post earlier in the year showing that McBackup’s numbers over the past 4-5 seasons shows he’s a high end backup.

If the search function worked at all on the new boards, I’d repost it

His style is hilarious; very Jonathan Quick-esque in how he's always out of position and never sees the puck coming in, except doesn't have the all-word flexibility and athleticism to make up for it.

Either way the pitchforks will come out the next time he gives up a few softies, and I can't exactly blame anyone.

He's been solid overall with a chaotic style.

McBackup is great. Hard to ask more of the guy, considering they picked him off waivers and are paying him pennies (relatively of course).

I do think he should get more games. I'm worried we are overworking Freddy, but he seems to be thriving so far.

He's a veteran backup. He gives you a 50% chance of winning the games when you need to spot start him which is about all you can ask for out of your second string.

Been effective when called upon, and his starts have been nights off for Freddy. Lou has done really well for us in the goalie department.

I don't follow the Marlies so I honestly don't know what kind of goalie he is now. What I remember from his NHL starts is a very scrambly, filp floppy, lucky goalie. How would you describe his game now?

For all the fuss made over his career numbers, he's been difficult to complain about as a Leaf. How long can we keep both Sparks and Pickard in the AHL, though? Something has to give there, but I can't blame management for holding out as long as they can. You never know when a guy might get hurt, or when a team might be desperate enough for a goalie to send a decent pick or prospect our way (Florida?).

People say 'Freddy is playing too much!', well duh. It's early in the season and once February and March roll in, and it's statistically more likely to be struck by lightning on the same day you hit the lotto than we miss the playoffs or teams behind us catch up, then you'll start to see more of Mac as Freddy gets time off.

Which is why Sv% is not how backup goalies are judged.

Wins and losses. Thats it. The sample size is so small thats all they can be judged on.

just because you SAY that is it doesn't make it true, I know you think that because you say it, it is true but that's not how things work

Some really like his game. Imo he's the same. I compare him to drew McIntyre a great all-star all goalie but just not an no goalie. He might make it but unjust don't think he will.
He was lights out last year with the Marlies last year too but I think Ray Ferraro put it best when Sparks was up, "when I see Sparks all I see are holes"
He doesn't set up or close up at NHL speed. He relies too much on his athleticism to make it.
Just my thoughts I know @SeaOfBlue and @SprDaVE would not agree with me
