Id hope for 6 year so after Tavares' deal is finished, we have the cash to burn. We'd be buy 2 UFA years I think.

My hope is 6 year 66 million (11 average) at the very most. 6 x 60 million would be ideal but perhaps unrealistic...

Yeah good luck. If he's signing for 7 or 8 years he's getting a hell of a lot more then 11.5. You're talking about 3-4 of his prime UFA years in that contract.


7-8 years he's getting 12.15-13.5M no question at this point with the cap being what it is. 5-6 years and you might get him for 11-11.5.

But IMO that seems kind of high if they’re not going with an 8yr deal.

I think a 6 yr deal structured 8 9 10 11 12 13 comes out to a 10.5 cap hit.

Matthews does not deserve 13 mil or whatever if 8 year deal. I feel like leaf fans are preparing for the worst so they can praise Dubas afterwards when its lower.

11-12 would be realistic max either way.

Think of it this way. Tavares...as a UFA got 11.5 mil. Why should Matthews get 11-12 as an RFA? If they do give him that so be it but how much more can he expect. McDavid makes 12.5, Eichel makes 10. This includes UFA years.

The whole idea of shorter term is to get him closer to 10, maybe even high 9s if they're aggressive enough. If he's getting 12 mil or whatever for taking up mostly RFA years Dubas failed miserably.

Yeah its not like bob didnt sign 2 contracts before or Atkinson hasnt resigned or johansen didnt resign or Jones didnt resign etc etc etc
