The solution would be for both sides to agree to a 4-6 year deal. Eichel signed for 8 years, as did McDavid. It's all relative to what each player is worth, but those 2 extra UFA years can be huge value wise. With where the cap is going, something like 6 years 7.5-8.5 million would be a fair middle ground and it'd still cost control Marner for a significant period of time.

If the Leafs want to go with the TBL model, they could bridge almost everybody, or buy up as few UFA years as possible. This would allow them to be more competitive in the next 4 or so seasons, but would have major trade offs down the line when their stars hit their UFA years and the Leafs either have to trade them, pay them more than they otherwise would had they locked them down 8 years initially (assuming they maintain their performance), or lose them for nothing to free agency very early in their careers.

With trying to keep Matthews this could be tricky... if Matthews goes to Arizona, they'll hand him a blank check.

And Leafs will match. He's an RFA, give up the pipe dream. Matthew's will end up in Arizona the same way Kane will end up in Buffalo, if they decide to take a 2-3 year deal in their late 30's just to say they played for the hometown team.

Eichel money for Marner? WTF

The more money Marner gets that sure the hell means more money for AM. Eichel money for Marner, does that mean McDavid money for AM?

WTF

Could get ugly if true.

Matthews one day could be worth McDavid money

Marner is unlikely to be worth Eichel money one day unless he goes up by quite a bit.

Eichel's career high was 60 points at the time of the deal. He should not have gotten that much.
And blah, blah, blah, injuries. Marner's lack of TOI and PP opportunities limit his numbers just as much.

At this point, Marner should be getting somewhere between Pastrnak (low-end) and Gaudreau (high-end) money.
What? That's a difference of less than 150k.

And Gaudreau and Pastrnak play with significantly better players and will have signed when the cap was way lower.

If Marner puts up another 70 point season, with the agent he has, I would be floored to see him sign for less than 7m. Don't think he'll get (or deserves) higher than 8.5 though.

But, real talk, f*** the Oilers and the Sabres. The Eichel and Draisaitl contracts are just yet another way they are screwing over all the other teams without even benefiting from their mishaps themselves.

Oh, I meant if Arizona made a trade Matthews trade with Toronto.

Eichel probably doesn't deserve Eichel money, Marner surely doesn't. He'll sign for 6. 5-7.5M imo. This is typical contract negotiations

Marner is absolutely not getting Eichel money in Toronto whether he likes it or not, and he knows that.

Both sides in a negotation open with somewhat unreasonable offers, and the two sides settle somewhere in between. This is how negotiations work unless you're Cliff Fletcher signing Jeff Finger.

Stop being a homer, no one, not even Leafs fans, should be thinking Marner is worth as much as Eichel. Even if Eichel is overpaid or didn't deserve it at the time, Eichel is Buffalos franchise center and he drives nearly half of Buffalos overall offense. Even Matthew's doesn't have that big of a role on Toronto, but if anyone is getting franchise center money it's going to be Torontos franchise center. Nothing against Marner, hes a great player, but Eichel is not his comparable.
