I.... what?

"I was initially surprised that Timothy Liljegren wasn’t included. But, after looking deeper, teams are down on him right now. He’s not yet 20 — way too soon to give up — but several scouts were not surprised the Kings chose OHL Guelph’s Sean Durzi over Liljegren."

From Friedman's 31 thoughts.
Yea this is a joke, I'm sure Dubas never gave them the choice. I'll take the 19 year old defenseman playing a key roll in a men's league over the 20 year old overager who is playing well but not dominating his peers. If Liljegren wasn't injured I think he would have made a strong case to have been a mid season call up (similar to Dermott last year).

He's not far removed from 'falling' in the draft, and I don't know if he's done a lot since to raise his stock among the teams that passed on him since then (I don't think his stock has 'fallen' either).

Doesn't matter what other teams think, as long we (Leafs brass) like him.

I don't think there's anything odd about the perception that Liljegren's stock has dropped but surely he's a much greater asset than an older player who still toils in the OHL.

I was just about to post this. What an absolute joke. I have no idea why everyone has all of a sudden soured on Liljegren, guy has been great as the top-pairing defenseman as a 19 year old in the AHL.

Sure Brannstrom and Heiskanen have looked amazing and should be ahead of him for now, but you're now saying a 20 year old OA defenseman in the OHL is the 'better choice' lol ok.

That's either wrong, or good for us if other GM's are that dumb. Win-Win.

People that believe Blake chose Durzi over Liljegren are the same people that think Middleton is a better prospect than Liljegren.

We have one of these special humans on our boards (I see you Vince Vega).
"Lilly is 4-5 years away from being a top 4 d man in the NHL"
"Marner drops 7-8 spots in a redraft"
"Mitch isn't impactful at 5 on 5, and is a 3rd line PP specialist"

When a guy isn't in the line-up for a full-season, people tend to forget or over-think what the player is actually like.

Liljegren had a very good Calder Cup run. I think he may have regressed a bit from his first year, but I would say that a majority of players have the sophmore slump.

Eh it's tough to see as we don't know his metrics from last season, but Jeff Veilette has tracked his underlying stats this season. He's looked great as a top-pairing guy by CF% this year, and Dubas said before the injury they were gonna call him up after the WJC.

The points still haven't been elite since he was 16, but his defense is way better than advertised and is easily the best RHD in transition in our entire orgnaization.

Honestly, I wouldn't even talk about Durzi as a huge loss. He's a low top 10 prospect at best, and guys are coming up to replace him in the system.

I have no idea who he talked to but it's absurd. Jeff said it best...

That’s hilarious. It really isn’t a stretch to say most hfboards posters know more about ahl prospects than most gms do. But whatever, lily and sandin look like top 4 players to ole mikey, better keep em aroubd.

That's sort of a dillusional thing to say. NHL teams spend millions of dollars on scouting and analysis and know more than "most HF posters".

Come on.

Yeah, Liljegren still look great to me so I'm a bit confused about why some people have soured on him. The two things I keep hearing is that he doesn't showcase the same offensive upside anymore, and that his skating is problematic. However, I think it's pretty unrealistic to expect a 19-year old playing that kind of minutes in the AHL to also flash gamebreaking talent. That's a lot to ask for. Showing that in your game is way easier if you play in the CHL or in more sheltered minutes. As for the skating, I think it's a bit misdirected. His technique is weird for sure, but I don't see any pace or mobility issues. So to me, the flaws in his technique just indicate room for improvement.

I think Liljegren will be a solid top 4 guy. Dont know if he'll ever be a top pair, but solid top 4 guy is good enough.

If you're a teenager playing defense in the AHL and not making an ass of yourself, you're a very good NHL prospect. People forget how rare and weird it is for both these guys to even be in the AHL. Both would still be playing junior if they were Canadian.

Have you seen the Boston Bruins video where they decide to trade Tyler Seguin?

I agree that the majority of NHL scouts are better than the majority of HF posters however there's a small minority of HF Posters who are just as, or more reliable than some NHL scouts

Depends on how he does next year on the bottom pair, but maybe in 2-3 years from now.
So you figure it will take him 5 or 6 years from his draft to become a top 4 d'man on the leafs?, interesting. A group of guys in here sticky111, leafchief, leafs at knight all think he will be in the Leafs top 4 next season lol
