McKenzie: Markstrom and Canucks don't seem like they're close

No real news here. Canucks and event on lockdown as far as confirmed information goes. Can speculate on what each side wants but can’t really speculate on where negotiations stand. I’d be shocked if Markstrom wasn’t signed to a 4/5 year deal for $6mish with a NMC to protect him from expansion draft. If the Canucks won’t include the clause some team will offer it to him in free agency. And they know it.

Ehhhhh....I think that would be a bad deal.

My Opinion.

I believe Markstrom's camp is opening with 6x6, something he could possibly get on the UFA market, so...

What it comes down to is balancing what the guy can get on the open UFA market vs his desire to stay with his current team on one side, and how bad it would be for the Canucks to lose him for nothing on the other. He already makes $3.7M and his bare minimum market value is $5M, so there's nothing unreasonable being discussed here.

I mean, it's only February and we have until July 1st to work out a deal. Markstrom is probably just focussed on playing hockey anyways.
Canucks should try to get something done in the range of 4-5 years @ $5 - 6 million. That would be a small discount IMO.

Canucks are laughably in cap hell due to ****ty contracts to aging veterans. You look at the Boeser negotiations and you can see how piss poorly Benning has bungled things. Jay Beagle for two more years! Baerstchi untradable in the minors! Loui Eriksson! Even Tyler Myers is an overpayment.

vancouver has so many bad contracts, very good stuff lol

None of you mentioned Markstrom, even indirectly, in any way whatsoever.

Koskinen got what, 3x 4.5 so that has to be the floor here. I’m guessing he wants something like 6x6 and that is probably
the market

prob ends up at 4yrs at 5.5 or 5yrs at 5.

canucks have bad contracts but they also have an abundace of midlevel prospects and they cant sign them all. so its obvious some of those will be traded with contracts if needed.

ontop of that roussell, sutter contracts are easily tradeable

The guy is 30 years old and was great last season, and must be in the vezina 3 this season.

Demko is a far far away from taking on the 1st, not sure he ever gets there!

Marky earned 4-5 years and a 2m raise, and he will get it ,either in Vanc, or somewhere else!

Its bad manor, trying to save bucks on your Mvp, sending wrong signals!

How is Roussel / Sutter easily tradeable? Who't taking those doozies on? lol

Roussel's knee reconstruction is likely a dealbreaker for all teams.

Cap hell? We have 20mil coming off the books when we need to re-sign Pettersson and Hughes, then all of Beagle, Roussel, and Eriksson are gone the year after. We’re really not that bad, we just need some ELC contracts coming in at some point to fill the gaps.

Ha, cap hell.

Markstrom, Stecher, Tanev, Virtanen, Gaudette, Leivo, Motte...we have one of two D walking, Virtanen and Markstrom getting a raise presumably, and a bridge for Gaudette...the rest is depth, which we have.

But no, all our non-Boeser or Horvat contracts are all cap dumps, and yet inspite of them we are tops in the division. Super logic. Markstrom will get paid on this contract, and we won't be worse off for it.

Pretty much this but it will be very interesting to see how this shakes out in the end.

I think that in order to keep Markstrom the Canucks are going to need to pay more than they can really afford and it will also factor in on other decisions such as resigning Chris Tanev (with no replacement in sight).

Some hard decisions are in order and letting Markstrom go and going with Demko moving forward might be one of them.
