Not even sure the NHL will reach the cup. They expect the POs to run through fall, which is apparently when we're expecting a second wave of the virus. Let's see how this goes. Habs should be out by then anyways.
Ι thought the Pens were afraid of Jesus Price.

I am literally fed up with these kinds of comments. Even if you think that Bergevin's team goal is to make more money than last year, then you do realize that their only way to make more money is to win more and get a better team right ?? In 2017, A SINGLE playoff game in the Bell Center generated an average of 2M$. Do you think that's not coming into the equation ? Making more money and lifting the Stanley Cup go hand in hand. They can't be separated.

Actually, there's a bigger risk of losing money going into the playoffs and paying full cap salary and losing in 4-5 games in the first round than going home after the season while keeping salary cap low. So if you're really trying to make money you'll either want your team to go deep into the playoff or go home after the season. That's not what Bergevin's is trying to do. He's trying to BARELY go into the playoffs while keeping his salary cap low. In the NHL today - with how competitive it is, there is very low chance of such tactic actually working.

At the end of the day the only way you can make more money than the year before is to actually win more games and generate more excitement. However, what I think Bergevin is trying to do right now is to generate AS MUCH money as last year while not doing better. He's not really trying to win. By forcing Julien into playing our prospects, he's trying to show off the future of the team so the fans continue to get interested, watch and talk about the team so he generates as much money - keeps his job - and continue working on the future.

Habs generate far more external revenues and profits, what is commonly called non-hockey related revenues in NHL CBA lingo

Far more.

That's why Molson doesn't care for the cup per se.

What Molson is doing is trying to not rock the boat while keeping the media satisfied with francos in management and the roster. Making a run for a cup requires going all in, rocking the boat, which is a sacrifice Molson doesn't seem willing to take, hence he's more preoccupied in keeping the brand intact, because that's what enhances his non-hockey related revenues, which by now, forks in a lot more cash than a few playoff games.

You can huff and puff about 2mil per game all you want, realize that a chunk of it goes into revenu sharing too.

A deep playoff run is always going to pay off at the end. You get to attract new fans and give real hope to the city. And a bunch of people will get to spend $$$ on every habs related stuff.

Going all in just means paying 8M more for a star player !!! Do you really think that after spending for 77M$ he's going to stop shopping believing he's better to not spend the rest 8M$ ??

Im not defending the habs management. But stating that they make MORE money while losing more doesnt make sense for me. If they were hungry for money Molson would have pushed Bergevin into buying and not selling at trade deadline.

You don't get it.

Look at those condos, financed through profits from the habs, they make a lot more money than a deep playoff run and a deep playoff run doesn't happen every year.

So what Molson does is play the safe hand. Try to keep the team afloat and 'competitive' (driven by marketing manures such as "once the playoff yaddi yaddi yadda"), and keep their media friends happy, although that part is becoming increasingly difficult because the media will eventually get fed-up of having only one out of their two main desires, french folks and playoffs, so Molson is kinda becoming stuck in this loop he's himself created, this situation of getting Quebecers for the media and keeping them because French replacements are hard to find, but those same people he hired don't do the job.

French sports media and the fans they influence, should be careful what they wish for.

I don't think owners buy sports team as a means to make a lot of money.
Billionaires are buying sports teams for different reasons than they used to

It's more about the prestige and the opportunities that come away from it, like building condos and branding them with the Habs name.

Of course generating some money is great but I don't think anybody buys a sports franchise thinking ''that's a great way to earn some cash!''.
I don't think Molson particularly cares about winning, his behavior definitely points towards the other direction.
