Lupul and Gardiner played 1/3 or 1/4 of the season for us.

I think both teams made equal gains in the off-season.

Should be a pretty tight finish again I would say. Injuries will be a big factor again.

Milan Michalek coming off a 35 goal 60 point season played only 23 games (1/2) a season. Is that the equivalent of Leafs missing Lupul?

Prior to the lockout Bobby Ryan had seasons of (31, 35, 34, & 31 goals) that's the equivalent of adding a Phil Kessel to the lineup this summer as an addition.

Although one Team appears to be trending up while the other down.

Is it fair to say Detroit also now finds themselves in a tougher division?

Well Detroit used to be in a division with Chicago that has won 2 of the past 4 Stanley Cups, with an uneven schedule promoting division play.

So I wouldn't call their move one to a tougher division, and I'm sure their happy to get away from the Cup champs.

 I'm sure they're happy too.

Lupul has been PPG ever since coming to the Leafs. A healthy Lupul is much, much better than Michalek. Not to mention the leadership and drive to win that Lupul brings to the team. He's literally won us a couple if games by himself over the past two seasons.

The reason why Ryan's goals and assists dropped was because he was finally taken off the Getz-Perry line. I really hope you're not suggesting that Spezza-Michalek = Getzlaf-Perry. I could see him barrly hitting 30 again with Spezza, but its really not as likely as you're suggesting, and that involves Spezza staying healthy for an entire season.

Detroit now finds themselves in a division with Boston, who've been to the cup finals twice in the last three years, along with three very young teams where the core players are just hitting their primes. They've definitely moved to a division just as tough, if not tougher. Points-wise, they would've been tied for 5th in the division last year, and that's only because of the Spezza/Karlsson injuries.

If the Wings think they're getting an easier division coming to the "weaker" East...they're in for a big surprise.

I am not confident in our group because our we are not strong up the middle. I wanna say that we can compete for top spot but with our centres I can't say that. We have Kadri and then a bunch of number 3s

Sens: Karlsson coming off injury, Michalek coming off injury, Spezza coming off injury, gaining Bobby Ryan, gaining MacArthur, losing Silfverberg.

Leafs: Gardiner coming off injury, Lupul coming off injury, gaining Bolland, gaining Clarkson, gaining Bernier, losing MacArthur, losing Grabovski, losing Frattin.

Not going to count losing Kadri or Franson yet cause there's still time for that but that's the major pieces for next season. Although MacArthur is not a major piece, he was a decent depth guy who could maybe pot in 15-20 goals.

When you write it like that and consider that Anderson (albeit in shortened seasons) has looked like an elite goalie, I have to give the nod to the Sens.

I'd be interested in a Clarkson vs. MacArthur poll for more goals in the 2013-2014 season, I mean the trend suggests Clarkson, but I wouldn't be surprised to see MacArthur pick it back up.

no. Lupul is a ppg player, Michalek is not.

no. Kessel is a ppg player, Ryan is not.

Ryan replaces Alfie's scoring, that's it.

Overall, the division is too close for me to call. I think all of BOS, TOR, OTT, MTL, and DET are going to be in a dogfight all year, and finish within a few points of each other. If I were to pick one team to finish 5th amongst them it would probably be detroit, as they not only had the worst record of the bunch last year, but their core is almost entirely made up of players in their mid-30s, and health over a full season is going to be a big concern for them.

I would. He's going to a lower scoring team. What Ottawa 2nd line?
Turris-MacA

Clarkson should get more, may not be enough to supplant Clarke.

I cannot believe I missed the most important player for the Sens. Alfredsson left!

I think Alfredsson leaving is a pretty big blow to the Sens leadership wise.

I still think Toronto's offence is deeper than Ottawa's.

vs. DET:

Hard to make out a Detroit lineup right now. All of Bertuzzi, Samuelsson, Eaves, and Tootoo may not even be with the team this year, even though they're currently on the roster. I'll leave two spots open for those 4, because they're almost certainly dumping a couple of them.

Now, those 3 are great and all for Ottawa but its not all about scoring goals. Can they handle the big boys that are the maple leafs? A team in the leafs that are great on the PK and play a more-so shutdown game nowadays than before yet can make you pay if you make one mistake. The leafs are a physical stature in which the wear and tear they would produce on quick teams like the sens just might be too much for them to handle. Who knows?

Point being, id put both teams fairly equal in different areas of the game, both can score, both play adequate D, both have coaches who know how to coach a full 60 mins.

Good points there. I would add to this that Boston owned Ottawa even more than us in few previous years (less known to fans as everyone was concentrating on Boston record against us). As we are shooting to be Boston Light we might as well start to see similar results.

Ottawa finished 1 point behind the Leafs 57 points to 56 and Ottawa played without Spezza (played only 5 games) and Karlsson (played in 17 games) most of the year and missing their #1 goalie Anderson (played 24 games) for a large portion as well.

This year all 3 are going to be back and ready to go.. Doing nothing in Ottawa would allow for massive improvement simply by their star players returning from injury.

Yes, but Lupul+Gardiner+additions+sorted out Defense (no more AHL players) could be equally or more valuable.

I cannot believe I missed the most important player for the Sens. Alfredsson left!

I think Alfredsson leaving is a pretty big blow to the Sens leadership wise.

If Alfredsson is a big loss for Ottawa then does he become a big gain for Detroit the new team in our division?

Do you think life-time Sens Alfredsson leaving Ottawa for Detroit was done believing his chances of winning a Cup is greater or less now? What does that say about the strength of the Wings?.

Well I think Alfredsson is more relied on in Ottawa for a leadership role where in Detroit he'll be taking a step back leadership wise. He wasn't the same player for Ottawa offensively but he's a depth guy with experience. In Detroit I'd expect him to play a similar role as Jagr did with Boston and what Jagr is going to do in Jew Jersey. Alfredsson could contribute here and there offensively while being sound defensively and bring that much needed experience in the last couple of years of his career.

Personally I think Alfredsson does believe he has a better chance in Detroit to win a cup given their track record the last 10 years.

I have no idea how Detroit's lineup will look like but I got this from a site.

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Abdelkader
Franzen-Weiss-Alfredsson
Nyquist-Helm-Samuelsson
Miller-Andersson-Eaves

They got pretty good depth and their forwards are responsible defensively.

So he's a decent gain for Detroit but I think he'd play a bigger role in Ottawa if he had stayed there.

Its funny, I was reading predictions today from multiple sites/fans and such. Almost all had the Bruins finishing first and then the Leafs and or Ottawa being 2nd and 3rd.

The star... what a slap in the face. I get it that the wings are the wings but they are older and its gonna be mentality and physically tough for them to make the playoffs this year.

I don't know man. I wouldn't make those things an accurate argument.

Sure Spezza is a #1 C and a better C than anything we have but he is also 30 years old now and health was a big concern for him last year. (especially back problems)
Karlsson is also a stud of a Dman even with his injury last year. Id argue the leafs have better D depth regardless (there I said it)
Anderson is a great goalie and a re-lived one every since the trade that sent him to ottawa.

Now, those 3 are great and all for Ottawa but its not all about scoring goals. Can they handle the big boys that are the maple leafs? This.

Say what you want, but we gave Ottawa a hell of a time last season (and I'm not buying the injury excuse - Every team goes through it). The Leafs played a physical game against Ottawa, and the Sens had difficulty containing it.
