JT miller is a consistent 50+ point scorer (82 game pace) over the last 4 years and is locked up at a good price for several years. He alone is worth a lot and im sure we wont be the only team asking on him so you have to give back a decent amount. With Callahan added maybe you take out the additional 2nd, but just because it helps out tampa doesnt mean you dont have to give them anything back.

Tampa has to move salary this summer. It isn't avoidable, and it isn't a secret. That alone cheapens the value of any player they try to move. Their urgency precludes any leverage.

That's not to say a bidding war can't/won't generate a higher-than-expected return for whichever forward(s) they decide to trade.

If the price for Miller ends up being what was proposed (multiple 2nds+), the Devils should stay out of it. If we're paying that high of a price, we should just go all-in on a top-4 LHD upgrade. JT Miller doesn't fill a need (at all), so it would be hard to justify entering and winning a bidding war for him.

JT Miller doesnt fit a need? I forgot we are swimming in top 6 forwards especially bigger ones with skill. Also if there isnt a top 4 LHD available (very possible) then you cant just not upgrade your roster because the thing you want the most isnt out there.

He’d be a fine player to acquire, but like said, he doesn’t fill a big enough need to justify entering/winning a bidding war. He’s a LW/C, and we have plenty of those.

If we go into 2019-20 without any changes (which won’t happen), we already have to shift Zacha to LW because of Hughes’ arrival.

That then leaves us overflowing at LW, necessitating further shifts of either Coleman or Wood to RW.

I’m against the idea of paying top dollar for a player that doesn’t address the biggest organizational needs (LHD upgrade or a true RW).

Keep it simple:

NJ Gets: Callahan, Tampa's 3rd pick
TB Gets: NJ's 7th round pick

For me, it's not enough to carry his salary even for a year. That's a back end third round pick, has almost no value in my opinion. I feel like there are much better methods to weaponizing your cap space if you are the Devils.

Hischier and Hall (signed) for Monahan and Gaudreau.

Who says no?

A non extended Taylor Hall @ 50% retained ($3 mil cap hit) + 2019 80th overall pick to Tampa Bay for JT Miller, Ryan Callahan, and 2019 27th overall pick.

New Jersey still gets the opportunity to sign Hall next summer (though only to a 7 year deal) after he wins the 2020 Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay.

Hall for Gaudreau

Calgary would have to feel pretty confident in ability to re-sign hall. New Jersey gets a stud to play with Hischier/hughes

This probably makes sense for both teams. Think Devil's add maybe 2nd.

What the hell?

Not even remotely interested. That’s terrible.

Not bad in theory.

But with Hischier, Bratt, Hughes, and potentially Boqvist, Devils don't need yet another undersized softer forward.
