Because he played in the CSSHL and MPHL in his draft year.

And because he currently weighs 160 pounds.

And scouts miss guys.

And there's still a decent chance scouts are vindicated and he flames out and doesn't have a meaningful NHL career. He's played 10 games.

Small sample size or not, scouts miss guys all the time. Which is why they should never be taken as the gospel.

Otherwise athletes such as Kawhi Leonard and Mike Trout wouldn't have been taken in the middle-to-late first round of their perspective drafts.

Its not like he is a super small or anything, he is what? 5 10? 5 11? - 165,170 lbs

It's common knowledge that hockey players exaggerate their sizes. That puts him probably in reality in the 5'8''ish and 160lbs range. That's about my size, and I'm considered small in real life, and would be considered very small amongst a bunch of professional full contact sports players.

The game is changing, so there is more of a role for a smaller player. That being said, a smaller player needs to excel at offence, because it's rare that they are effective at anything else. Your not bringing in a 160lbs player to win board battles in your bottom six.

Not really crazy at all. He was a good player in a horrible league in his draft year. For comparison, Mark Jankowski doubled his numbers in the same league in his draft year. D+1 he wasn't even a point per game player in the BCHL. He did well in his D+2, but nothing close to deserving to get drafted. He was 13th in the league in scoring and only scored 15 goals as a 19 year old. That's not exactly setting the world on fire, especially in that league. Wasn't even really worthy of an NHL look until his sophomore year at MSU

The reason he flew under the radar for so long is that they are set to capture movement at a certain height to avoid big birds like eagles (Beagles for short) and fools on deltaplanes (I hate those bastards...) throwing themselves off cliffs from messing up their readings and having random things appear on screen for no reason, and Taro Hirose didn't reach that height, period.

This is so stupid. There are a ton of great defensive players who are small.

I live in BC and watch a decent amount of BCHL hockey. I’ll be the first to say the level of competition is not great. In his second year Hirose was 13th overall in scoring. In front of him is Jost who is younger and a bunch of nobodies.

BCHL League Site

I don’t think Hirose was worth a draft pick in any of his draft eligible years. That being said it looks like his game could translate well to the NHL and Detroit might have a good player.

Strikes me as a guy who should have a career even if its just as more of a PP specialist and doesnt play big mins 5 on 5. I could see him having a Tyler Ennis type peak/prime pretty easily but thats certainly not his ceiling, just a fair lower end projection from what we've seen so far. 3 or 4 20 goal seasons and some years ~50 points would be great for a free agent signing

Almost as ridiculous as ghosting a poll after you put your foot in your mouth about the results.

 You're creepy as hell buddy, please stop quoting and tagging me regarding that poll

Congrats, HF agreed with you on a poll. I will admit the mistake of appealing to the results of the poll in the first place.

Wouldn't have if you hadn't ghosted it.

But hey, you owned up to your failure, so we're good. :thumbu:

He will probably be at best a middle 6 winger who has mildly severe limitations, and is only 22 years old. I don't think it is that crazy, honestly.
