If we had a Gudas-type guy at RD on the third pairing and PK, I would be inclined for Luke to be a regular over Bahl. But just by the makeup of our defense, I don’t think Luke gets minutes unless injuries strike or he comes out and looks dominant. Where does he play?

Marino is the best partner stylistically from the RD. But you don’t break up Graves - Marino that has been our matchup pairing all year. Even that’s a stretch as Marino is good positionally and in transition defense, but a Hughes - Marino pairing would get abused in their own zone physically.

The other two pairings will have either Severson or Hamilton. Luke adds little value with one of them. Maybe you can look to have a super sheltered Hughes - Severson pairing for offense, but I would be terrified of that come playoff time. Much rather see Siegenthaler/Bahl with Severson.

Seven D is an option, but that never seems to work well in practice. Only makes sense if one of the 7 is a special teams specialist, but with Hamilton on PP1, you don’t play Luke just for PP2 minutes.

The only other option would be to play Luke instead of Severson. I just can’t see a scenario where Luke is an improvement over Severson. I’d much rather trust Severson there then risk Luke making mistakes, not to mention now you’re playing someone on their off-side.

While I agree with this, Luke, right now could be the 2nd best offensive and transition D-man on our team. Without even playing a game, I'm sure he could have more impact than Bahl (and a few others that won't be taken out) offensively and transitionally.

So sure, there's definitely some risk with his D-game coming in, but his offensive upside and abilities are that high and should lead to more chances. It's a good problem to have.
For sure. And obviously Ruff and Fitz know this. And they will have to weigh the potential positives and negatives.

I think Bahl playing as well as he has complicates things but if Luke is right now able to bring more to the team then there is no benefit to not play him.

100%, I'd be down to play Luke, but I'm not sure how you take Bahl out right now in the playoffs. I'd give Luke the last 2 games and see from there.

Frozen Four is April 6-8. Devils regular season home finale is April 11. I may have already penciled that in for a trip (Padres playing the Mets as well).

It's too bad I ended up taking a different spring break trip, me of November would have been happy to have the plan work out.

That's awesome! So excited to watch Jack and Luke for years to come
Quinn becomes UFA when Dougie has one year left.
