The GM of Team Slovakia had this to say:

"For Lubo, it's the last chance to play in the Olympics, so it's a very emotional issue for him. If he won't be allowed to play, it will be tough for him. In Slovakia, he has the same status as Zdeno Chara. I think that Garth Snow does not understand what it means to have Lubo Visnovsky in the Slovak team. Hockey is the most popular sport in Slovakia. If we play a game at noon, 50% of the population doesn't go to work to watch the game instead. NHL players are great heroes here and the Olympics are the only chance to see them play together. If Lubo says that he can play and he does play in NHL, then we don't understand why he can't play in the Olympics. If he was injured, we would understand, but not like this..."

I don't think the Isles care about Lubo's status in Slovakia, but like I said, if he's injured, put him on the IR list so Slovakia can at least replace him with some other D. But don't make him play injured in NHL while forcing Slovakia to play the Olympic tournament with one less D.

just a quick question: who is he kidding with the bolded. How can football not be king in slovakia?

If you knew about the history of hockey in Czechoslovakia, you would understand. Especially the post-1968 rivalry between Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union turned hockey into the most popular sport as it was seen as the only way of resistance against the invaders.

Bottom line, the best Slovak result in football: Top 16 in WC and that's about it. The best Slovak result in hockey: Gold medal, two silver medals, bronze medal in WC, 4th place in the Olympics, tons of medals for Slovak players as a part of Czechoslovakia... A country tends to love a sport in which it is best at.

Not really. In Austria football is clearly the number one. Sure people watch top skiing events, they watch the olympics, but they neither understand skiing well, nor do they practice it often. I see how olympic hockey is special, but that phrase was flat out wrong from my perspective.

I would let vis play, but the isles cant really stop him as far as i see anyways (pls correct me if i'm wrong), so now it's really up to him.

If you go to a soccer match in Slovakia, the stadiums are almost empty (especially after the split of Czechoslovakia). Even on the national level, the games are almost never sold out. On the other hand, every Slovan Bratislava game is sold out.

So there goes conspiracy about Lubo faking injury to avoid playing for Isles :sarcasm:

Excuse the ignorance as I haven't really been following this story... If Garth Snow is indeed preventing Vis from going to the Olympics how is this going to help as land any free agents? It just makes us look bad.

As far as I know, Visnovsky agrees. It really only becomes a problem, IMO, if Vis is publicly disgruntled. As long as he is in agreement, it seems like hey both came to a mutual understanding and I don't see how it hurts us.

That conspiracy sucks...
What bothers me is that we probably rushed him back so that we could make a playoff push. He hasn't looked the same... not remotely. I know it takes a while to shake off the rust, but I really hope we didn't rush him back. :shakehead

I thought Snow had no power to stop him from going? Why doesn't Lubo get on a plane and go?

Good question. I guess Garth Snow is a stronger force than Slovakian patriotism...

Or maybe it's just Lubo being fickle, as usual.

He can go if he wants. That fact just doesn't fit the Nationalist narrative.

And Vis said that he wants to talk about it with Snow one more time, but the chances are slim:

"I have no leverage since I'm not in 100% shape on the ice. The world won't end. I will root for the guys in Sochi. It's all really sad especially because I wanted to say farewell to the guys in a national jersey under the Olympic rings."

This won't do any good for the morale...

jeez.

Let him go and be a PP specialist.

I'm really upset by this. For the Snow apologists, yeah I suppose he could appeal, raise a grievance and go... but his boss publicly said no. That's a tough and unnecessary spot to be in.

I think it is the missing of so much hockey. Clutterbuck didn't look good when he first got back and didn't miss nearly as much game time. Vis will be fine and I am sure he would not play if he was still feeling concussion symptoms.

I'd be willing to guess if Snow gave his blessing to Viz to go to the Olympics and Viz got re-concussed, and was out for, oh, say, the rest of the season, thereby taking him out of the equation as a possible trade chip, this board would absolutly explode. And I realize any player can go to the games and get hurt but all it would take with him is just getting hit the wrong way. I mean, he's JUST NOW coming back from months away. I can see this both ways, but I certainly understand the organizations concern.

IMO, the only real question is if he should be playing. I assumed he should be playing now, but this last interview where he is saying he is not 100% right... I am now beginning to wonder if he should be playing at all. This club is out of the playoffs, and since diving to the bottom of the standings has real value in the form of a pick for us or a good trade chip at the draft, it seems illogical to care about anything but his getting better for next season. So ok, hold him from the Olympics, but also hold him from the NHL as well. If he is still concussed keeping him up is 100% stupid.

And then I remember Ricky Baby on the bench, when he was too injured to play several years ago, yet the organization kept him in there for appearances sake.

Add me into the group who are now confused as to what the club is doing.

I honestly wish we trade Visnovsky at the deadline, I know he has a NTC but ask him what teams you wanna go to and go package him off or trade him straight up.

Crying about a Nationalist sendoff.. are you kidding me?? Let me go to Russia and get drunk with my friends. I dont care If im not 100%, I wanna go!!

But if he can't play in the Olympics, why is he playing in the NHL?

That's a reasonable question.

Did you read the article? He stated to the Slovakian GM that he did not want to play in the Olympics. Just like Vanek wants to test Free Agency.

What is so hard to comprehend?

Yet there are plenty of articles saying he would like to. Again, here's the conundrum:

He is fit for the NHL.
He is not fit for the Olympics.
Before Vis weighed in, Snow felt obligated to state the isles don't want him to go.

It sounds like Snow has reason to believe Vis should not be playing hockey. BTW, Olympic hockey is less contact, more wide open, and patrolled by trigger happy euro refs. Yet it is ok for him to play in the NHL?

Sorry, but the more I think about it, the more this smells wrong. How is he ok to play in the NHL, but not for the Olympics? Can you explain how that logically computes?

And before you state what you stated, how about you go read some of his comments from the last week in January where he says he wants to play there badly.

Maybe he doesn't want to embarrass himself?

He's a fickle guy, obviously so he has some motivation to pass on playing.

In the believablity category, Viz and Isles management are one in the same in trustworthiness.

Like I said, something smells wrong.

I did read the past articles and this one. Everyone can try and spin everything into conspiracy and hoopla but at the end of the day, he said it to the GM. It is was it is until he leaves the Isles and states it differently.
