Hiding under WTG's bed...
As far as forechecking goes in the bottom six, Motte is one of the team's best. I have a strong appreciation for players who can forecheck well enough to actually take the puck away from the opposition. That takes a high sense of anticipation as well as quickness.

Motte led the Canucks in takeaways per 60 and was second among regular contributors in hits per 60 in the playoffs. He hits and gets the puck back. He stepped up in pivotal games on the score sheet too. I think, to a significant extent, he's been carrying Jay Beagle.
Yeah maybe I undersold him too much.

What a great return for a half-season of Thomas Vanek.

I forgot to include this earlier: if anyone wants to review footage of Loui Eriksson, here's a look at his performance in Game Six against St. Louis (Aug. 21, 2020):

The last time I remember WANTING to review footage of Loui Eriksson was shortly after he got signed here.

I remember seeing him being centered by David Krecji. I saw him working hard around the net and I saw him getting a lot of greasy goals.

That was over 4 years ago.

Today.

After reviewing the footage that you most generously have put together for us.

I am..

More convinced that ever..

That Loui does the little things..

This nickname is accurate.

He's also like a forward version of Chris Tanev which isn't a compliment because Chris is a d-man.

Can we deploy Loui on the blue line?

Thanks for the footage!

PS Can your script put a glowy halo around Loui as well?

Hang on a second, are you suggesting that Loui ISN'T a terrible cancer that is killing this poor team from the inside out? I must say I'm impressed by all the hard core socialists on this board who are infuriated by the fact that Loui makes too much money for what he does which is of course one of the terrible by products of capitalism. Maybe there IS hope for the revolution...

Tanev is an offensive dynamo compared to Loui "pointless" (both in terms of point totals as well as usefulness on a roster).

At this point I don't care if we dangle Virtanen with Eriksson for free, to get this bum off of our roster. The Canucks are going to lose some key pieces "Marky, Tanev" because of Bennings stubbornness to take on salary or offer something enticing in the deal to offload Eriksson. Just get it done, so we can move on and start seeing what the future brings us.

I think it’s 50/50 Loui is still apart of the Canucks next year.

I don’t think Be bing is going to be able to trade him, especially without a sweetener.

Loui will say f*** you and not agree to any sort of contract termination and with potentially no AHL season, the threat of demotion might be moot.

Benning made his bed and has to live with it.

Problem is, I don’t think he has the ability to fix it.

Unless Eriksson outplays somebody in training camp next season, then he's destined to follow Baertschi to the minors to finish out his contract.

It would leave the Canucks paying close to $9.5m a season for guys to play in Utica. But I guess if the owner is OK with it, then it is what is is.

I realize this move won't save them very much.....but having Eriksson around spending as much time in the press-box as on the ice, isn't good for anyone--the player or the organization.

Flat cap, whats a legit sweetener for two years of him? Where does he fit in any lineup? Im thinking more that were stuck with him
And in Loui’s final year he gets 4 million in real dollars. So even with a cap hit of six, he’s near impossible to trade after this coming season too. Benning should have made certain Loui had enough bonus money paid that his actual dollars paid in both of the last two years was 1 million. Then Loui would be traded for sure to a floor cap team. That 4 million in real dollars for the last year is killing any potential trade. That and Loui has a Limited NTC to 15 teams.

Or you simply take the hit now and buy him out.

2 years so he could play with the Twins and thus gets 4 years with Petey. Great logic.....

1st round pick would be my guess. He's *ALREADY* over 35 years old. Makes Gaunce look like a Art Ross trophy candidate (zero offense unless you're talking about an empty net). 4th line defensive wingers are 'a dime a dozen'.

Man, the way his contract in the last year switches from mostly bonus to more real money, they sure wanted to make it untradeable throughout didn't they?

Has there been a worse contract in the last ten years of Canucks hockey? To go with such a lackluster effort from the player?

Gotta give props to his agent, he made sure his client would get all his money no matter what happened

Contract negotiation:
Eriksson's agent: Loui won't accept a dollar less than a $5 million per year long-term deal.
Benning's counter: I won't pay Loui a dollar more than a $6 million per year long-term deal.
Eriksson's agent: uh...ok.

Buying him out saves us almost nothing because most of his cap hit is from signing bonuses and buyouts don't reduce those at all. This has been covered to death. It's basically not an option. We'd get more cap relief (about $1 million) having him play in the minors, and that's still not very much. It sucks but if he's determined to play, it probably makes most sense to just play him.

It cost the Rangers a second round draft pick to offload the the final year of Mark Staal's contract ($5.7m) to the Red Wings.

What would it cost the Canucks to offload the last two years of Eriksson's contract? You don't want to know. The conversation would start with a first round draft pick and might even include another B-level prospect. Benning would be crazy to even think about this.

Even if the Canucks were willing to eat some salary, there's still almost zero chance they can trade Eriksson in this flat-cap era. All they can really do is bury him in the minors for another year. Maybe they can then talk about a buy-out for the last miserable year of his contract.

If Eriksson was the only bad contract on the books you could live with it.....but the Canucks have at least four by my count with no chance of trading any of them.

Everybody seems to be predicting that Benning will be active in the trade market. But I can't see how. They have a bunch of overpaid 30-plus players nobody wants; and while Virtanen and Stecher may be available, they won't net much in return either. And it now seems certain that Tanev and likely Markstrom will walk.

So who's left to trade?

I think I'm with you here. I would give up a whole lot just to never have to talk about Eriksson again. LOL.

Any 1st round picks he hasn`t yet dealt.

I think it actually went like this:

"Lucic signed in Edmonton? Quick scratch his name out, write in Loui Eriksson, and send that contract off to JP Barry!!!"
