Every time I see Foegele, I come away impressed. This guy has to make the team.
Slavin with two power play points tonight.
I really wouldn’t mind seeing him manning the point on the second unit. His shot sucks (compared to Hamilton and Faulk) but he’s a smart enough player to be able to make it work.

It's a little early for that. Tampa got clown-pounded in both games. NHL.com's box score is weirdly stuck part-way through the game right now, so I can't say what the shots were tonight, but they were 35-17 last night. It's hard to accurately judge a goalie when it's like that, especially when Darling had a couple of yips that could have gone very badly against an NHL-caliber opponent.
Darling looked the worst of all 4 goaltenders. Too jittery, looked brittle.

At least the team seems to be buying into Brindy right away. Obviously a long, long way to go though.

The guy I'm most happy for right now is Brindy. I know it's just the preseason, but he's obviously getting through to these guys. Whatever else has gone well the past two nights, the guys have played the game the right way. We may not win a lot of 4-1 or 6-1 games in the regular season, but if the guys continue to play this hard, we'll win more than a lot of people think we will.

He's not Aho, but he's kinda Aho. Very smart. Anticipates well. Makes the "right" play every time. He's a perfect compliment for Staal, too. I'm having a hard time seeing him back in the AHL this year.
I'll admit it feels good, but the '06 team was packed with veterans. This team is mega-young. I think we should be prepared for ups and downs and maybe a playoff appearance this season, but probably not. But this is almost certainly the last season for a long while that the Canes will be underdogs in most games.

His shot does suck, but he's got a good sense of when to let it go through traffic. The past couple of years that hasn't meant much, but when you have the kind of traffic in front of the net that we did tonight, a Slavin-style shooter isn't the worst thing. I also think he has some handles that he hasn't really shown off in the past, due to playing so little on the PP, and he's got such a good stick for swatting down clearing attempts. A guy like that playing the pivot role is, again, not the worst thing you could have at the high point.
And that's especially true when the other unit features two guys who can clap bombs. All of a sudden the PK and goalie have a lot more to think about... the stylistic difference between the two units is so stark that you almost need to match PK units with them.

I feel like the main thing holding Slavin back from significant PP time is his PK capability. it's worth sacrificing what he brings to the power play to save him for 5v5 and the penalty kill.
