Powerplays in the past have shown how top end talents dont always mix on a PP unit

Id imagine thered be too much wanting the puck on that PP, cant have Rielly and Karlsson on the same d pair for it either.

Marleau - Nylander - Marner
Karlsson - Matthews

2 Things:

1. It's Eklund
2. People that argue that the Leafs cannot fit another premier player after signing Marner, Nylander and Matthews do not have a grip on the Leafs cap situation.

Pittsburgh had 45% of their cap locked up in Crosby, Malkin, Kessel and Letang.

They just won 2 Cups.

Ya, but if Matthews = Crosby and Karlsson = Letang, who are the Malkin and Kessel on the Leafs? See why Pittsburgh model can't be duplicated?

What percentage of the Leaf fans saying “lol eklund” and “don’t give this guy clicks” etc are actually furiously refreshing his site hoping for another update about Tavares or Karlsson? 99? 100?

Ya, we're all chomping at the bit to trade an insane package....and then hand out an insane contract. This rumor is stupid and has zero chance of happening.

And anyone who takes this seriously, even a little, needs to have their head checked.

Are you talking about Eklund's conclusion that the Leafs will be players for Taveras or Karlsson? Or what he says his source told him which was that the Leafs were workshopping scenarios for acquiring one of those players? Because I certainly believe the latter and believe that the same is true for most of the teams in the league.

Where do Matthews/Nylander raises come from?
Until we see what the players do with the escalator this year, and how a future Seattle team factors into projected revenue, its hard to tell. If the cap goes to 82 million it changes a lot if the escalator isn't used and it is at 78 they have no chance of pulling this off. The market for a Nylander type player seems to be what Ehlers and Pastrnak got, the same probably applies to Marner. Matthews probably gets between Eichel and McDavid.

That said, this is Eklund throwing darts at a board for hits. I doubt he put much thought into it.

Isn't it pretty obvious an organization would brainstorm ways to fit Tavares and Karlsson into their programs? I mean when you're an NHL executive, you are paid to think about these things, right?

 Tavares will cost around $11 million per or so Karlsson probably $12 million per both Marner and Nylander get around $6.5 million per or so Matthews probably $11 million to $12 million for any one of Tavares or Karlsson on top of Matthews and Marner and Nylander you're looking at close to half of the cap being tied up in 4 or 5 players.
Or they all could take a reasonably priced contract to help the team.

Nylander, Marner, Matthews.

Pick one, trade the other two, and maybe you have a shot of having the cap space for either of those players.

Pick one, trade the other two, and your franchise is gutted if neither of those players decide to sign with Toronto.

Cap is going up, and likely again in 2019.
Nylander and Marner will not break the bank on long term deals, Matthews will.
If the Leafs sign Karlsson then they'll let Gardiner walk.

Hypothetically, there would be lots of room to sign one of Karlsson or Doughty.

ahh false?

Nylander and Marner will both come in around 6M. Matthews probably gets 11
Rielly, Marleau, Brown, Hyman,Zaitsev,Andersen,Kadri,Martin are the only other guys signed after next year.

that makes about 56 Million + JT/EK + Hortons LTIR with a need for about 10 more players (mostly depth guys)

it can be done. Marleau and Martin moved clears up 8.75. thats gets em to about 33 million space

yup. people who know nothing about the leafs don't realize that they have over 20+ million coming off the books in UFA/ buyout/ dead cap space

30 mil space min. next year with 8 forwards,5 dmen and 1 goalie signed. Gardiner and Hainesy up the same time as EK frees up another 7 mil. Marleau and Martin can be traded with only a year left on their deals to free another 8.75

leafs are gonna start doing what teams like the pens/kings/hawks do. pay the stars and fill in the gaps with young talent/cheap UFA who want to play for a contender.

no more 3rd/4th line guys making 2.5,3, even 4 million.
