Penguins trade Jarry and Galchenyuk at $2.75 million
Leafs trade Johnsson

Is this a reasonable base for a deal? The thought here is that the Leafs need a backup goalie and the Penguins need a top-6 goal scorer (since Galchenyuk has been kinda a dud in Pittsburgh and appears to be in Sullivan's dog house), so the Leafs would downgrade from Johnsson to Galchenyuk to get Jarry and the Penguins would just recall DeSmith to make him their backup.

I feel like the response to this will be "the Leafs aren't downgrading on a prime aged top-6 forward to a rental PP specialist just to get a young backup goalie", but I was unsure enough where I thought it was worth it to make it a thread.

Also has me thinking. Good deal in terms of player value. Contracts make me hesitate, but on the surface I probably do it.

Swap DeSmith for Jarry.
Leafs can’t afford that and therefore don’t do the deal.

Gally looks like a cap dump more than anything and Johnsson fetches more than a dump and DeSmith.

Chucky is not a cap dump. He just doesn't fit our system. Chucky playing with Tavares & Hyman would be click. Move Mikheyev to line 3 and you have 3 scoring threats rolling. We can retain salary. DeSmith had pretty amazing stats last year with a horrible defensive effort last year for the Penguins.

This thread is comical. The only goalie Toronto has a chance of getting from Pittsburgh is DeSmith.

Jarry was drafted to be the #1. Murray came out of nowhere and they let Flower go. Now Jarry is looking like he is living up to his potential. Neither of these guys are going anywhere for the aforementioned reasons, so just stop.

I’d do this as a Leafs, creative proposal.

What has been so bad about Galchenyuk this year? Not meshing or poor effort?

Not meshing plus Sullivan gets weird sometimes with players he's not immediately a fan of. Galchenyuk has been fine this year, he's on pace for like 45 points and 30 ES points while not getting a ton of minutes. He seems to be like what Perron was for the Penguins, a decent 40-50 point player but a bad fit.

Another example of a player that Sullivan is weirdly not a fan of is Dominik Kahun. Kahun is on pace for nearly 25 goals and 50 points, almost all of which are at ES, while being an excellent analytical player for the Penguins this year. But since Kahun had a slow start to the year from adjusting to a new team, he's still not getting used like someone who is on pace for 50 points with excellent analytics. He was even scratched after a game where he put up 3 points in like 9 minutes of ice time. He's only getting like 13 minutes a night right now in the Penguins bottom-6, when he's playing like a legit top line forward. Sullivan picks and chooses his favorites like any coaches, so he's fond of guys like ZAR and Simon while being not a fan of guys like Kahun and Galchenyuk.

I'm glad you're Jim Rutherford or know Jim Rutherford so well that you know who he will or won't trade.

What's even funnier is that it was well known that JR tried to trade Jarry in the off-season, he just didn't get an offer to his liking.

Maybe he can break 30 points for the first time in his career.

2017-2018: 28 points in 68 games
2018-2019: 35 points in 78 games
2019-2020: 17 points in 24 games
Total: 80 points in 170 games, pace of 39 points per 82 games

Swing and a miss. In the last 2 years, Johnsson and McCann are separated by 6 points while they've played nearly the same amount of games and TOI/game. McCann is way better defensively and is also a center, which seems to pretty clearly give him the advantage as far as I can tell.

Johnsson plays with Matthews and Nylander. And Hyman is a LW, but is playing RW with Marner out. Galchenyuk is a LW, correct?

As a Leafs fan, honestly, this is a pretty good proposal. I'd take it. I think a fresh start could do Galchenyuk some good. Johnsson is signed to a nice contract, but we have plenty of cheaper options (Engvall, Timashov, Korshkov, Bracco) that could jump into the lineup and replace him in the top-6 next year if Gally walks.

I actually think this is really good for the Leafs. I could see Galchenyuk fitting in well and they really could use a solid backup

Yes, if the Pens would part with Jarry, the Leafs should do this deal (I would ask for slightly more retention on Galchenyuk as the trade as posted is not quite dollar for dollar).

I love Johnsson, I've been following him ever since we drafted him but I'd actually think long and hard about this.

Galchenyuk has the potential to get eviscerated in this market though lol.
