No, they're not
- They have 16 regulation wins this year. That's 2 less than Arizona and sandwiched between Seattle and Washington, neither of which anyone would call a contender.
- Their starter is recovering from a serious confidence problem while the backup is still out and has only 26 games of NHL experience.
- Anyone who has watched them play this season will tell you that they completely rely on the Big Four. They have no consistent scoring depth, they are undisciplined, defensive breakdowns are a constant theme with this group and at least five other things.
Given the cap increase expected next year has already been spent on extending Nylander and the fact that this team's overall play is trending down it's very plausible the Leafs "window" has already closed, or is closing fast. And the theory of all that cap space they'll have to build a winner when Tavares is off the books? That's a whole other thread, but short version: Don't count on it.
