Taxes are higher in Montreal.

I know the leafs can offer endorsement deals like they presented Stamkos with.

You are still dreaming please wake up. Karlsson and Doughty are going to be the highest paid defensemen when they are signed by their current teams of through free agency. They are 2 of the best defensmen in the NHL and I would rank both in the top 3 along with Hedman.

Think more 11 million plus if they make it to free agency.

I thought it was Jan 1. Oh well, a couple of months off.

Jan 1st is when a player on a 1 year deal can sign an extension.

However players can only sign 8 year extensions if they were on the team as of the most recent trade deadline.

So Jan 1st = 7 year max extension for a UFA player on a one year deal, or wait till after the TDL for an 8 year extension.

I didn't say Tavares would take a 1 year deal, I said he'd be a target because every team will offer him a deal

Whats to stop a team like Toronto doing this.

1 Year - Max 16 Mil

Resign him a few months later (jan when you can re sign your players) could be only 7 as I just read that.

8 Year deal
8-9 Mil average

This 80-88 mil over 9 years.

same if not more money than getting 12 mil for 7 years plus you have a good chance at winning in year 1 and beyond.

This is great until Tavares wrecks his knee in the first few months of the season or the Leafs lose draft picks for Salary Cap circumvention.

This isn't salary cap circumvention and anyone can get hurt at any point but I bet the 18 mil will help him and rest up if hes hurt and sign 7 year contract.

Since your strong on what ifs. What if he doesn't get hurt? Or what if he gets hurt in the summer now?

Maybe we should put all players in a bubble and bed rid them until they have a 7-8 year contract.

why would Tavares only sign for 8-9 million at that point when he could get alot more money on a new deal?

and if they talked ahead of time and made the handshake, wink wink deal for January while negotiating the 1 year deal it would absolutely be cap circumvention.

I don't know what doughty wants, I can't predict the future.

I know he wants to win, I know he is childhood friends with Kadri. I know the Leafs are a up and coming team with a great young core. I know they are coached well. I know they are managed well. I know the leafs can offer endorsement deals like they presented stamkos with.

I don't know what kind of cap hit doughty will agree to.
Doughty has more or less stated in the past that he wants to be one of the highest paid players in the league. He's going to look at what Karlsson is asking for and ask for at least the same #. There's absolutely no way he's going to sign for less than what PK Subban is getting. I guess all 1 year deals are cap circumventing then.

Why would he sign for 9 because he just got 18 mil for 1 year. Double what he would get lol

I'm not saying the Leafs will sign Tavares but to suggest that the Leafs cannot sign him long term is not really accurate. The answer is it depends on a lot of factors.

1) What $ value can the Leafs get the big three signed and are they willing to accept a little bit less if they signed Tavares?
2) If Tavares decides to move from NYI, will he be willing to accept a little bit less to increase his chances at a cup?
3) What will the cap be in 19-20? The suggestion is that the cap will be 80 next year and 82 the following year.
4) Where do the Leafs want to spend their $? D? Tavares? Other?

Here is an example of a roster that includes Tavares and the big 3 in 19-20. There are a lot of assumptions in this but I don't think it is out of the question. I don't believe this will happen but it's not completely out of the question. The example below assumes Marleau stays in his last year of his deal.

Does this increase his chances of leaving then? Im one of the biggest Doughty fans, but it would hurt me if Leafs signed him for more than 10M. Hypothetically.

Matthews Nylander and Marner will cost around 23-25M a year to resign. Can't spend around this summer like there is no tomorow

Why not? If they give him a one year deal at max, he comes out of it still in his 20s, and likely coming off a good year given the players he'd be playing with. It's a risk as any short term contract is for a player, but it also has the potential benefit of effectively extending his final major contract by a year.

For sure; like I said, I understand there's risk there. I just don't think it's totally bonkers to believe that he might look at his options and think "14+70 with some risk is better than 70 with likely much less money in any contracts following." Maybe not likely, but not inconceivable either.

It's absolutely bonkers. Completely inconceivable. In no way will Tavares jeopardize his last big contract. He's earned going UFA and signing his career deal. We are talking about a risk of having 16 million vs possibly 84 million (12 x 7) so that he could maybe have 100 million. The gap between 16 and 84 compared to 84 and 100 is so high that it is 100% inconceivable.

Thorton or Stastny might take 1 year deals eventhough I find it hard to see Thorton leaving SJ. No way Tavaras is taking a 1 year deal unless he's offered max money, this is his chance to cash in on a 7/8 year deal (8 if he could find a team willing to toss the NYI a pick for his rights if he is for sure not resigning there). Stastny could be an interesting fit, he's found a good place in Winnipeg right now so it will be interesting to see if he's willing to hop ship from there.

Either way it'll be interesting to see what TO will do, they have 1 year before they have to write 2 more big paychecks.

Even at max money, which will be in the ballpark of 16 million next year, I cannot believe Tavares will sign a 1 year deal. Teams are going to offer him at least 12 million per. I wouldn't be shocked to see Montreal come in north of 13 someplace. Why would he risk a 7 year career contract for 3 or 4 more million on the front end?

This isn't salary cap circumvention and anyone can get hurt at any point but I bet the 18 mil will help him and rest up if hes hurt and sign 7 year contract.

Since your strong on what ifs. What if he doesn't get hurt? Or what if he gets hurt in the summer now?

Maybe we should put all players in a bubble and bed rid them until they have a 7-8 year contract.

By your logic players should just sign max contracts every year? Tavares would be insane to risk an 84+ million dollar contract for one year at max. The risk vs the reward makes no sense. The what if's above, are exactly why players like Tavares will sign a long term deal instead of a 1 year max contract. You may not care about the what ifs, but everybody who gives any advice to players absolutely cares about those what ifs.

In my opinion they have to go all out. This next 2-3 years will be the best window for the Leafs to win it in regards to the entry level contracts they have.
