Well by summer 2019 Marner, Matthews and Nylander are going to be paid between an extra $12-15 million combined so they really don't have much room for any long term UFA signing (Stastney and Tavares both getting big deals) . Their discretionary room went into the Marleau signing last year.

Maybe Joe Thorton but even he would probably be looking for 2 years which might be unfeasable.

Marner should get a bit more, but market value for Matthews should be about 10 million. People are quick to point out Eichel's contract, but just becasue Eichel is overpaid doesnt' mean the Leafs need to overpay Matthews.

That's actually exactly what that means. Eichel is a direct comparable and Matthews has outperformed him, as any Leaf fan would point out, and the cap is rising, so his agent will argue that he deserves more. Good luck trying to get him for less than what his agent thinks he's worth. Might happen for 500,000k a year, but not much more. You are realistically looking at 11-12 million a year for Matthews, 7-8 for Marner and 6-7 for Nylander.

Quoted for truth. This guy knows.

It's not to say we're signing Tavares, but it could all easily work.

This fellow also has 2m to spare to shore up the bottom pairing, 4c or backup goalie.

If tavares wants to play in toronto badly enough, he'll be here.
“Easily” meaning if you get 4 players to give pretty big discounts.

Yeah, it could work, but NOT "easily". That's ridiculous.

The Leafs need to pay big-time bucks to their young guys coming up, and they also need to upgrade their D-corps, to become legit contenders. That will cost serious $$. Taking on a 10-11 million dollar 2nd line Centre would be idiotic of them to do.

They are NOT the old, dumb Leafs anymore, and they DON'T need to make these dumb, big splash moves any more.

I'm confident that they will stay the course, and build their team properly, and not waste their cap space on pipe dreams.

You seriously think the cap will go up by $10M?

Leafs have much more then 18m in cap space

At a 80m cap the leafs will have roughly 33 million to spend.

We have 23m now + 5m cap raise + 5m Horton LTIR

Cap friendly is the place to be.

That cap very quickly disappears on renewing contracts (Matthews, Marner, Nylander) and Lou has never given out great UFA contracts.

That 18 million after just the big three’s renewals drops about ... well almost all of it

They have some decisions to make because they have some good players up for contracts. Also need to fill out some other holes.

a 2 year deal no matter who it is won't kill the Leafs

History shows that Matthews will be worth in around 12-13% cap hit.

12% of 80 million is 9.6mil AAV, whereas 13% puts him at 10.4 mil.

We're looking at a ballpark of 9.6-10.4... not 11+ mil.

Nylander ~= Rielly in their ELC years
Marner > Rielly in their ELC years
Rielly signed at a .685% cap hit

.0685 x 80 = 5.48

My guess at this point in time:
Matthews: 8x10.5
Nylander: 6x5.75
Marner: 7x6.25
===========
Total: 22.5 mil cap hit.

How much is his agent asking for?

It doesn't factor in the 5 million a year we make disappear to LTIR (Nathan Horton). Also, Matthews and Marner's renewals aren't until 2019/20. Even if they sign a new deal their cap hit will still be their rookie deals.

Well its a good thing I wasnt talking about this coming year.

And as if it matters - if you sign big contracts this off season theyrr still there when you need to reup Matthews Marner and Nylander... so it doesnt make a difference

Except by then we probably are able to move on from Marleau. Between what the cap should be around in 2019/20 and Horton's contract getting buried we have enough money to make moves and add someone big if we want. At worst, we just have to bridge Marner and Nylander and try to win in a 3 year window while they are still cheap. Matthews will get paid regardless.

So risk losing Marner and Nylander to bigger paydays? Doesnt seem logical.

Toronto doesnt have as much cap space as they think they do, as most teams usually dont. 18m this year includes extensions 2-3 years away.

Does this increase his chances of leaving then? Im one of the biggest Doughty fans, but it would hurt me if Leafs signed him for more than 10M. Hypothetically.
No, because the Kings know they're screwed if he leaves. They won't be trading him before next season's deadline unless they're definitely out of the playoffs (unlikely if everyone is healthy) or if he comes out and says to them he absolutely will not re-sign with them. Kings will pay him whatever he wants.

Also, if he wins the Norris this season then he he'll be tied in Norris wins with Karlsson. BUT Doughty will also have 2 cups (hopefully 3) on his resume. He's not taking a penny less than what Karlsson gets and may even ask for more.

Except other deals become easy to move in a years time which frees up more space and with the cap rising we are fine. Its not like the cap stays stagnant. Matthews, and Marner don't significantly eat into this 18 million, as Matthews deal is pretty much fully paid for by Marleau's deal coming off the books either by trade or a 1 year maneuver.

And no, we don't risk losing them by bridging them. We may have to trade one in 3 years time and pay the other, but its not like we would lose them for nothing.

I can agree after reading that

I don't think there has been anything leaked about how much he's asking for, but a good agent would use Eichel as a direct comparison. Eichel's contract kicks in next year at 10 mil x 8 years. Say the cap rises to 80 mil next season that'd be 12.5% of the cap hit for the given team. If you indexed Matthews expected salary to 12.5% of the expected cap for the first year of the contract (say for instance it rose to 83 million) you'd be looking at round 10.4 mil/year. They'll also argue Matthews is the better player averaging 37 goals per season vs Eichel's 24. So I'd say he'll cost around 11.

It's absolutely bonkers. Completely inconceivable. In no way will Tavares jeopardize his last big contract. He's earned going UFA and signing his career deal. We are talking about a risk of having 16 million vs possibly 84 million (12 x 7) so that he could maybe have 100 million. The gap between 16 and 84 compared to 84 and 100 is so high that it is 100% inconceivable.

Even at max money, which will be in the ballpark of 16 million next year, I cannot believe Tavares will sign a 1 year deal. Teams are going to offer him at least 12 million per. I wouldn't be shocked to see Montreal come in north of 13 someplace. Why would he risk a 7 year career contract for 3 or 4 more million on the front end?

By your logic players should just sign max contracts every year? Tavares would be insane to risk an 84+ million dollar contract for one year at max. The risk vs the reward makes no sense. The what if's above, are exactly why players like Tavares will sign a long term deal instead of a 1 year max contract. You may not care about the what ifs, but everybody who gives any advice to players absolutely cares about those what ifs.

It works in other sports. Any one who signs a 1 year contract is an idiot then. even 1 year at 4 mil.. Better to sign 8 year 100 K

These aren’t UFA contracts.

Rielly for 5. Kadri for 4.5 seems pretty good
