Murray is the only reason this was a game for more than 10 minutes.

It's not the goalie. Yeah, they have a stinker here and there, but the team in front of him is causing all this. I'm a firm believer the goalie is a reflection of the team in front of him.

There was an interesting discussion later in the game that might be worth continuing here . . .

2-3 years ago, the Pens pretty much were faster than everyone else. Over the last 18 months, the Pens have lost some of that speed, become less mobile on defense, and the rest of the league has gotten faster. Yet NOTHING from the Pens perspective has changed, save that Canada trip where the Pens backed up their 1-2-2 out of respect for the speed of the Leafs, Oilers, and Flames.

I'd like to add one thing.

Speed is not strictly about skating, it is about playing quick. Quick passes and puck support on offense, quick pressure on the puck carrier on defense (taking away time and space).

The Pens are trying to be too cute and they slow the game down too much. Too many guys trying to carry the puck through the NZ. Too many Ds trying to skate the puck out instead of finding the outlet. Too many guys being stationnary. We need more stop and go, more movement when we have the puck. Moving our feet and playing with purpose when we do not.

In one word... work! Smartly AND hard!

There was nobody brutally stupid (Oleksiak/Johnson) or brutally weak (Ruh). At this point we need to replace Cole and Lovejoys ability to move the puck and take shots. Cole and freaking Lovejoy.

Sullivan isn't being fired though nor should he be so if we play real bad there's no light at the end of the tunnel that way.

Maybe a big trade would happen. That's about it. It's up to the players to play better or enjoy the golf course even earlier than usual.

How much are we paying for the worst D-corps in the league again? It's an utter disgrace what JR has put together back there...

He should think about sending out bottom 6 roleplayers like Sheahan, Cullen, Rust (unfortunately) and see if he can ignite the team with some motivated young, skilled, speedy legs. They are not pulling their weight anymore.

All three of those guys were responsible defensively and skated hard. Something this team is desperately missing.

Bonino did not skate fast, but he played fast. Very effective forechecker, did not try to be the puck carrier if he did not have too, good at supporting, very smart with AND without the puck. He processed the game at a very high level.

One of our big problems is that we have too many dumb players. JJ and Oleksiak being the dumbest.
