There was an interesting discussion later in the game that might be worth continuing here . . .

2-3 years ago, the Pens pretty much were faster than everyone else. Over the last 18 months, the Pens have lost some of that speed, become less mobile on defense, and the rest of the league has gotten faster. Yet NOTHING from the Pens perspective has changed, save that Canada trip where the Pens backed up their 1-2-2 out of respect for the speed of the Leafs, Oilers, and Flames.

As @Scandale du Jour put it . . .

The most important thing is your point about different like having a different strategy. You have to play to your strenghts.

A guy like Oleksiak should be a good puck mover... instead he tries to skate the puck out too often. Similar story with JJ. He is trying to play like he did in College. This **** doesn't work in the pros. Problem is not personnel, it is not playing to our collective AND individual strenghts. That's on Sully.

Everyone in the NHL plays the same variations. Everyone has a 1-2-2. Everyone has similar breakouts. Everyone has set plays on faceoffs, etc. It is about what you deploy against WHO and with which players.

Heck, as @Solzhenitsyn put it, we actually haven't just not replaced Daley (the guy @Mr Jiggyfly keeps talking about as the guy who could rush the puck we never replaced) . . . we also haven't replaced what Lovejoy and Cole (yes Lovejoy and Cole) could do, relative to say JMFJ and Oleksiak.

Sully needs to have a come to Jesus moment. As much as his refusal to match lines properly at home is embarrassing, this Bylsma level arrogance when it comes to adapting to the team he has NOW and the NHL he is dealing with NOW is absolutely lethal.

This D will have the team outside of the playoffs by the time Schultz comes back if it’s not changed or unless Crosby/Malkin have to shoulder a workload bigger than they needed to a decade ago.
